shredding strings

Picked up a used Jackson, just for shits and giggles. Just to make it complete, what kind of strings are good for metal/shredding type music?

OK, that's fair. I am currently using some d'adario (SP?) with a wound third, love them. I play them on a guild that's a lot like a strat. My real objective in buying the Jackson was to have a stereotypical metal guitar, and so I want to typify that in every cheap way I can, starting with the strings because they're cheap.

SO, let me rephrase the question. Those of you who shred, what are your favorite strings to use for that kind of music?

I use Ernie Ball 9-46 or 10-52 hybrid sets.

I certainly wouldn't want to use a wound third, but that's just my preference.
It still boils down to personal preference. I don't like real heavy strings period and thus I play everything with the same guitar and the same strings.

If I wanted a stereotypical shred guitar, I'd probably slap on some light gauge strings and crank the action down really low. There's not much else to it.

I would second the Ernie Ball's. Slinky 10's for me!!

I third the Ernie Ball 10s. I prefer Boomers myself, but that's personal preference.

I think that the wound 3rd string is indicative of a pretty heavy gauge set of strings. Shredders tend to prefer lighter gauge strings due to the lower tension and ease of fretting notes with minimal finger pressure. So the "light strings, low tension" comment above is pretty spot-on if you ask me.

Been using Ernie Ball Hybrids as long as I can remember. Originally because I used to keep breaking my low E with 9's, but didn't really like the first to third strings with 10's. But I kinda used to them now. I fret pretty heavy handed anyway so wouldn't really benefit from anything lighter.
