I finally finished it. It's done to the best of my current knowledge. It could probably be better. Nevertheless, I'm proud of the progress.

Excellent, Nika. I enjoyed it. The song has elements of a Russian atmosphere to it, with maybe influential bits of Bjork, Sting, Basia, and Lady Gaga. Very clever lyrics and good vocals. I like your use of ad-libs in the chorus.

Thanks for giving it a listen and commenting. Interesting notes about influence. Bjork and Sting I am very familiar with. I've been a Bjork fan since The Sugarcubes. I grew up listening to them, The B-52's, The Violent Femmes, David Bowie and R.E.M. - those were my favorites. There's also a super soft spot in my heart for British synthpop - I am not as familiar with Basia and Lady Gaga. I know Lady Gaga is pretty huge, but I never really caught on. I just youtube'd Basia and I do remember hearing that song, Time and Tide somewhere, sometime in the 80's.

Did you do the mixing ?
Do you mind sharing the instrumentation you used and your recording set up ? I'm a sucker for that kind of info. It's nicely put together and carries a similar bent to Sting's "We work the black seam together", kind of like a slightly higher energy, revved up sister to it.

Good influences all around! Regarding Lady Gaga, I'm not a fan, but I have heard a song or two of hers.

I visited your YouTube channel and listened to some of your other material. You have a nice voice and you should write/record more original songs.

I mixed it in Studio One v2. Instrumentation is pretty much all Native Instruments vst's. I use an Axiom 49 as my midi controller, Focusrite 2i4 audio interface and AKG 220 for vocals.

Thanks.

I just started writing about 6 months ago. Since then, I have about an EP's worth of material. The problem has been buckling down and hammering out the arrangements. I'm kind of at a slow crawl, here.

You've certainly learned quickly and the results are nice.

I completely agree with you about the "slow crawl". I think that producing a really good "final" version of a song takes the efforts of many, from songwriting, to instrument playing, to vocals, to arrangements, to production, to mastering (and probably some other steps that I've missed), although some go at it solo and the results are great and sound "radio-ready".

Anyway, you're doing great and I look forward to hearing more from you. :)

I haven't heard that song in a long time, but now that you mention it, you're right. It does. I knew I was hearing a trace of Sting's influence in there (intentional or not), but I couldn't put my finger on it until you mentioned that song. :)

The learning-as-I-go bit is a big part of the slow crawl. If been thinking about sending some stems to a mixing/mastering service just to see what it could sound like with a pro sheen on it.
