Shouldn't We All Be COLLaborating More?

Just another guy, really.
Recent threads...

A synth-head (no disrespect intended) wants to make his synth sound like a guitar...

Another bemoans the poor state of piano sounds among modern synths...

Another member here ask if a DAW can stand-in for, not a drummer, but a DRUM MACHINE...

A common thead running through these, and no doubt, other threads, is the considerable time required in order to make a sow's ear sound like a silk purse. In most, if not all these cases, it would take less time to get guitar/piano/drum/vocals/other sounds from (GASP!) a guitarist, pianist, drummer, vocalist, etc.

There are 38,997 members in this forum. Even with inactives, lurkers, noobs and wannabees, chances are most of us are within striking distance of several of our HomeRecording brothers and sisters.

So, shouldn't we be reaching out to one another, requesting collaberators for our projects? I think that would be great fun- and as we are all social creatures, the fellowship would be icing on the cake. I know I would be happy to drive a few hours, maybe even dedicate a weekend, to coolaberating with someone on a recording project- I am not a professional session musician, so I'd likely do it for free, or at most, travel expenses and room and board. What FUN that would be- make new friends, meet people here who are only faceless names, get to play music for a weekend. I would think I am not the only one who would enjoy that interaction.

Perhaps a "Collaborating" forum?

You can pretty much do that, I'm thinkin.

There's enuff good doods and doodettes around here that I think if someone tossed their part in the MP3 forum and asked for some colab, they'd get it.

Every time I'm asked, I end up being the beer and pizza runner. :D

There's a lot of collaboration going on already. Just gotta look at the posts to see who contributed what. Mostly in the MP3 Clinic.

The mods and folks in France have had discussions on re-organizing the boards a little. I think a collaboration forum was mentioned, however, not sure what the consensus of that was.

For now, people have been using the HR Compilation forum for collabs. Though, admittedly, it probably gets little traffic.

peace.

btw: Feel free to offer suggestions in the BBS feedback section.

Good Idea

You know,
I agree that with todays technology and fast internet connections it is very easy to collab over the internet if there is no one local.

I prefer getting together with people, but the online collabs has some unique pluses, one being I can do my recording at a time that is good for me.

Not to detract from this site, but there are many sites out there specifically for that purpose. I regularly collaborate with folks across the US and abroad as well.
I have done Rockabilly with a friend in Italy, Jazz with a new friend in Greece, As well as France.

It is way cool.
The resulting productions are miles above what most can do on their own.

I, for one, really like the idea. LIVE colabs seem to me to be a great way to expand ones recording horizons as well as playing chops. I'm not the greatest recordist or guitarist, but if I was asked to help someone on a project, I know I'd give it eveything I had. But unfortunately few people live near South Dakota that I know of. (Plus I'm out of country for the next little bit.)

EDIT: tmix beat me to the post and my statements were/are not intended to argue their point. Interesting how two totally different positions were posted at nearly the same time.

And I end up eating and drinking it whilst everyone else yells at me for not making their part loud enough in the mix ;) :D.

I would like to just take a few weekends out of the summer and go visit some home studios. Although I haven't been a member of the BBS for long, I was lurking it for about 6 months, after seeing just how many stand up people there were, I made this my homepage. :)

On the other side of it, if anyone wants to come to Omaha NE for a weekend, I have 2 guest rooms for crashing, and a gas station full of beer 2 blocks away. PM me if anyone wants to take a weekend vacation!

Absolutely. I've colloberated on well over 100 tunes with people here. So have many others.

Well, personally I'd like to find some like-minded individuals here that would like to collab at compositional/recording level. But it seems this board has a lot of rockers and rappers, and not much else in-between.

well next time, would ya save me a slice of the pepperoni, anchovy, macaroni and cottage cheese?

And turn up my kazoo, dammit!

:D

and this one time, I was getting beer just bein myself and this guy asked me if I'm always like this...

I gave him this...

and he said nevermind.

huh...

:D

It's all yours. The mac n' cheese I can see, but anchovy breaks the rule of the three Fs that should not be on pizza: fish, fruit and fungus.
And turn up my kazoo, dammit!
Hey, if you'd quit jammin' it up with half-chewed cottage cheese, I might. But right now it sounds like you're choking the chicken - and I don't mean that as a euphemism for the ultimate act of self-absorbtion, I mean it sounds like a dying rooster!

(Sorry, I was just pretending I was saying what I often would like to say in the studio, but am usually not allowed by common courtesy.)

:D
