I recently got an email from cakewalk that says for a "limited" time they will allow all pro audio 9 users to upgrade to sonar for 150$ What do you all think, especially those that have Sonar, is it worth the extra dough??

Is your machine man enough?

I upgraded, and haven't looked back. If your machine is up to it, and your card has WDM drivers, it is significantly better than PA9. If not, wait until your ready.

I really like the new interface, the softsynths, and I find its much better behaved than PA9.

There still are some bugs (mostly MIDI as far as I can tell) but I find it much more capable and flexible than PA9.

Well....

Sonar is much more of a resource hog and it's still a bit buggy, but...

I opened up CW PA9 the other day (which I have looked at since April) and it seemed so, well, anchient.

The interface is night and day from PA9 and if you do anything with midi, the DXi Synths are very nice, as are the automated effects.

I paid $99 for the upgrade and haven't regretted it a bit, but I can't really say I'm doing much more with Sonar that I couldn't have done with PA9. I enjoy working on it more, though.

Hard to give you a yes or no on this. Bottom line is how precious is the $150 to you and what else could you do with it. I find some of the features great, and I couldn't go back to PA9. But waiting for version 2.0 is an alternative (except you'll probably pay more).

I realize this was a pretty wishy-washy response - but it's really a call you'll have to make for yourself. PA9 is a fine program, and certainly acceptable for recording. Visually Sonar is light years ahead of PA9, and to me it's easier to work on. But if the bottom line is getting good sounding audio recorded, there's not a lot of difference. In other words, it ain't gonna make you sound any better.

i'd upgrade to sonar, but i wouldn't upgrade to win2k. i haven't had a moments peace with win2k. it's a piece of shit.

:D If you have the money, upgrade to Sonar. :D

My view of Sonar is similiar to dachay2tnr, so there's no need for me to type the same info. :)

Ok, i think i get it. I would like to see how good they have improved the program but i just hope they are still offering the upgrade in oct. when i get my financial aid money (i.e. music money:rolleyes: ) One of you said you got the upgrade for 99$!!! where was that cause there sayin 150?

Shem, the $99 deal is gone. Cake is always pretty goofy about prices, watch there website carefully, and strike at the right time.

Just wait a few months until the competition puts out a new product, Sonar will drop to $99 again.

OK - I'd like your opinion(s) on my situation.

I'm using CWP9 with Windows 98SE and it's working fine. I have an orphan sound card (Gadget Labs 824) so I will not be seeing WDM drivers soon, or ever.

1) Would it be worth it to me to upgrade to Sonar just for it's plugins and "improved" interface?

2) Does it seem to run stable under Win98SE, or is upgrading to Win2000 pretty much a requirement?

sonar xl from home studio 9

my question is this.....
i record only audio tracks. with home studio 9, i was only able to playback 8 tracks. now with sonar xl, i can playback a billion. but i dont need all the midi features.
i am currently running Windows ME and using a SBLive PLatinum 5.1 soundcard. there is absolutely no latency on playbacks.
On recording, i notice that the monitor lights have latency, is there a reason for this?
Also, my recording volumes are alot lower and i havent chagned a thing. any suggestions?
im wondering, should i sell the sonar XL and get pro audio 9 instead?
Sonar XL cost me $400.00.
any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Well, i have no idea but spacedye I'll trade you my cwpa9dx for your sonar!:D

LOL!!!

hahaha, sounds like a fair deal to me....
i think im going to sell sonar xl and get home studio 2002 instead, since im already familiar with the program and all. even though they are basically all the same from cakewalk, maybe itll take a little less time to get comfortable with 2002.
