Switching from DAW to cumputer based recording. I own a Blue and White G3, 320 RAM, 300Mhz. I want to run Digi 01.

Is it worth upgrading the Mac, or should I get a PC? Cost is my main concern.

Thanks for all replies

Upgrading a Mac, specifically the processor, is usually a costly affair - often rivaling the cost of a whole PC. Though, since you're already familiar with the Mac and you wanna go with a Digi 001, I'd recommend you stick with the Mac. You may be able to get by with what you have, depending on your planned usage.

DAW stands for "Digital Audio Workstation" which IS a PC.

aaah, I just see what you mean RWhite...
He must mean something like Fostex VF-16, KORG D16 and things DAW...

I think you should upgrade the mac. My reason being that it's the only way to use Protools without the dreaded WinME. Besides it's mac. And did I mention it's mac?
But then again I'm happy with my XP machine.
Hey, can you use directx plug-ins on a Mac?

Where do you get your info? Pro Tools works with XP just fine.

To address duratboy's post, upgrading an obsolete system like that somewhat old G3 makes no sense. By just upgrading the CPU, you will most likely still have bottlenecks because the rest of the system is not using current technology (AGP, faster RAM...)

Don't waste your money on upgrades - just buy a new system.

I agree - whether you decide to go MAC or PC, just buy new. Upgrading a MAC makes even less sense than upgrading a PC. Generic PCs you can usually just pull out the motherboard and replace it. Good luck trying that on a MAC.

The MAC vs PC arguement is worse than Cats vs Dogs. Suffice to say either will work for you and be a good pet. :D

If you already know and like the MAC OS, I'd say buy a new MAC and be happy.

If that is a rev.1 B&W dump it and get something else. Those had data corruption issues with the stock ATA bus. Unless you install a drive controller card. That, the 001 and video and your out of slots. No AGP means limited video performance as well.

If it's not you could throw a ZIF upgrade and some more RAM in it pretty cheap and it would run PTLE just fine. Actually that machine will run PTLE pretty good the way it is unless you want to run lots of plugs and softsynths.
