Hi guys! I was wondering if is a good deal, to trade my old Rode NT1 for 2 (not matched) MXL 603... I have 2 NT1 that i use for OH (and vocals, and stuff), and maybe i should keep one, and trade the other for 2 603, so i can use the 603 for OH mainly and the NT1 for vocals, guitars and stuff...
What do you say?
Thanks!
btw, which one of the NT1s have better reputation?

I'm not sure what you latter question was. However it can be noted that the earler NT1 used a Chinese capsule as well as less advanced electronics as compared to the "all Australian" newer NT1-A, which uses a capsule designed and produced in their new Australian facility as well as completely newly designed surface mount electronics. Now Kenny will rib me for even jumping into this post as he knows I'm a big Rode fan.

HELL NO!!!! I am actually shocked at all the good words I have seen towards MXL in posts on this site. I have used many MXL mic's and everytime I think to myself "that is the worst mic I have ever heard" I have seen many well known producers tear apart MXL mic's, and those same producers will usually say really good words about Rode mic's. So I feel it is not just my opinion, I would never even consider trading a Rode for an MXL. I wouldn't trade an NT1 (one of the hands down best mics for under $500) for an entire truck full of MXL's lol.

Gee, I wish I knew "many well known producers". That would be cool. Just to stand with them, one by one, day after day, and get to watch and hear each "tear apart MXL mics." And, of course, they must be really, really well know producers because they "usually say good words about Rode mics." Smart guys.

I have to differ with you though about the truck deal. I'd trade an NT1 for a truckload of MXLs in a heartbeat. Then I would sell those thoudands and thousands of MXLs to all those chumps that like them. Then I'd take the money and buy some real mics.

LMAO, Thanks!

I bought an NT1 when they first came out and thought it was a great mic. After a few months of using it however it soon found a resting place next to my AKG C3000. They have both since been sold probably many times by now. If it came down to having to use an NT1 or a pair of 603's in my project studio I think I'd shut down until I could get real mics. :)

I wouldn't want an MXL or NT1. IMO, there are better mics to be had that don't have the harshness and brittleness. The 603s and NT5s are two other mics I didn't care for, yet people rave about them.

I would love to know what you are putting your NT1 through to be calling it "brittle". I have not found it to be that way at all. Granted it has the obligatory rise in the upper end for good reason, but it is anything but brittle. Perhaps the pre you are using or some other factor may be effecting your thoughts on that. I also find if I want to warm it up I put it through a ART TPS-II and it's like melted butter then. Just my experience, but perhaps others have different experiences with their different gear. By the way, there IS a difference between the older standard 1 and the newer 1A. I'm not sure which you are critisizing.

LOL ok maybe I exagerated a little bit, I would trade for a truckload and sell them to people with hearing disabilities as well lol.

Which other mics do you think are better than the 603 for OH (on the same price range)?

I haven't found any mics in that price range that I liked. I mostly use SM 81s and TC20s (both very afordable considering the quality they kick out). I also use them for live sound applications.

Came on guys! I know a lot of you use the 603 as OH..! Let me know what you think... Thanks

603's are fine, they give great results for overheads and acoustic guitars. Yes i think its a good deal. i dont care for the nt1 much, but if you already have another one, you should be fine.

Ditto

Seriously, you can get a pair of Samson CO2's that will sound a million times better than the 603's for $120. And you would still have the NT-1. I would trade you the CO2's for an NT-1 in fact lol.
