Hey guys I have an MXL990(I know its not the best). I use an Alesis Firewire16 as my interface. My question is would getting a seperate stand alone mic preamp get me any better sound than the Alesis built in preamp.? If so any reccomendations on a preamp in the 100to200 dollar range?

I doubt you will find much better preamps in the $150 - $200 price range.

I'd spend the mney to get a better mic, then a better preamp. I know saving isn't always an option. I'm super impatiant. So I would hat spend he money to get a better mic. Mabye an akg percption I have always been pretty impressed by them. I think you'd definately get a huge mprovement.

mic pre

Ok, Yes. To answer your question. Using an outboard mic pre will give you a better sound than using just the built in alesis. Check reviews on here, EBAY, Musicians friend then go buy one used. Good luck
