should i ditch my sblive?

i've got a pro audio 2496 that i use for recording and everything else. i got the sblive because i was told i couldn't play midi with my aardvark card, which was true. but then i got sonar, and now i can play soundfonts and softsynths through my 2496. i don't do anything else with this computer, except for music. i have another home computer that i use for everything else, so maybe i should just rip it off to avoid future problems like the many i've seen people report lately with sonar?

One word: YES! :)


Creatives cards only cause problems alone or with other cards. Get rid of the bastard!
 
Postal.... I'm almost on the border of throwing mine out... it's disabled in one of my two windows installations.

You can ditch your sblive and use LiveSynth Pro for soundfonts as many ppl here are doing. However, it'll take some CPU power, so you'll be able to have less plugins and/or tracks. You will also loose Vienna and easy soundfont previewing/editing.

If you keep sblive just for midi and connect it digitally (via SPDIF) to your card you'll have neither of these drawbacks.

I kept mine as a sampler, and I'm quite happy with the combination.
 
that's a good idea. i'm scared of the implications (conflicts) and stuff like that though.
 
As long as it doesn't give you any conflicts, keep it.

You shouldn't get rid of it (if not just for the SoundFonts usage).
 
I'll chime in with James Argo and spinsterwun-- keep it if it works, it can come in handy.
 
... and if you computer crashes, let it be the first to go. :rolleyes:
 
Just make sure that SBlive audio drivers are not selected in Sonar if you are using it for MIDI only. This configuration has been quite stable for me for about a year now.
 
You will need the audio drivers available in SONAR if you want to render the MIDI tracks to audio in the most straightforward way.

I've had an SB Live coexisting with my Delta 66 for nearly three years with no problems after the initial hassle of getting them squared away...
 
the thing is i don't use midi sounds at all, i only use softsynths and softsamplers.
btw, i'll be posting a couple of my first works with sonar (a solo work, yipee!) soon in the mixing clinic. it's good to have some music that's only mine after being in a band for so long. :)
 
I kept Soundblaster cards along side my other cards my years, with no problems, once they are set up.

On the other hand, I recently removed my Audigy card, which sat alongside my Audiophile, in my general-purpose (i.e. game) PC. I've been please to find that since then the Audiophile has worked flawlessly as a game card. It might have a problem with older DOS era games, but I don't play any of those. So don't worry about using it as a solo general-purpose card.

I wasn't using the SB's midi/softsynth, so when the opportunity came to pawn it to a friend - I went for the cash rather than it sitting around collecting dust and losing value.

(Ahhh... I remember the days when I too was happy with a card from Creative. I've come a long way since then.... :D :D )

The thing is, that with my Audigy I had so much problems, that I really hate Creative :mad:. I didn't have that kind of problems with the SB Live! though...


As they say: If your computer is working and is stable, keep it. But only if you have to. ;)
