Should I crack my Yamaha MD8???

I know this is not the right discussion board to ask this question, but, I feel there is lots of experience here to help me with my problem.

I have an MD8 that has lost channels 1 and 2. I have tried all options and feel that service is the next step to try and rectify the problem. I have sprayed the line-in/playback switch(compressed gas duster) and got one channel to record a faint signal with a very dominant hiss over it. This leads me to think that maybe it is a dirt problem. I have this unit in a semi finished basement which is dusty. The machine has never been moved since I got it and has worked fine for the year and a half after that.

I'm wondering if I should crack it and give it a spray, but I don't know what I will encounter once I start removing screws.

Any help???

Im willing to bet that your phantom power input opamps are dying out. If Im right your looking at sending it off for service. Not a user fixie kinda thingie.

actually.....

fader camshaft bearings?? Sounds like a car part.

Whe I adjust my stereo fader, the level on my (stereo out) meter, rises and stays steady at a high level. When I select my monitor select switch to stereo, I get a hiss even when I am not playing any tracks back.

I dunno....

Yo Count Roch:

The MD8 is a nice unit. I still have mine hooked up in the studio but I seldom use it. Just hate to take it down I guess. I'm using the Yam 2816.

You will probably get a hefty bill if you send it anywhere for service; Sweetwater services almost anything. You would have to call the 800 numbers to check with the other major vendors.

However, if I were you, I'd think about upgrading to a digital box. Sweetwater might even take your MD8 in trade. You'd have to check. But, you have many digital choices, some new SIAB's out there less that 1k. Good deals on many good boxes. Full Compass is another major vendor to check for service too.

The MD8 has decent technology; however, the digital boxes are much better.

Good luck shopping.

Thanks for the info.

As a hobbyist, I was hoping to get a little more use out of this unit. I really don't use it much between my family, my buisness and my band, so it kinda pisses me off when it started f*&^ing up. I was hoping it would be a quick fix because I didn't use it a lot to begin with, so, I fee that it amay not be anything too serious,(difinitely not overuse)

Another thing, I'm up here in Canada, so the figures you are talking are significantly larger.

Thanks again

Yo Roch:

CANADA! Yo! Check in with Blue Bear Studios and see if the Bear knows where you might get your MD8 repaired up there.

Was in Toronto once; delightful place.

You can touch base with BB via this site if you catch any of his posts. Or, you can look him up, UP there.

Ya know what??

I think he is only an hours drive from me. He is around Ottawa, Ontario. I'm about 90 miles from there.

Good idea.

Cheers
