Should I convert?

So I've been a PC guy since I was little (my dad worked for IBM). I'm comfortable on them, I know them, and as much as I hate windows..I know how to get around it's "quirks." I'll soon be graduating from college and will be going to a production school. The school uses almost exclusively Macs. I'm not nearly as comfortable on Macs as I am on PC's, but I have used a few before, and I'm sure I could figure it out after a little bit of a "break-in" period. For a graduation present I might be able to get some help towards a new computer, but I need to decide what I want. I want to get a laptop so I can take it to various studios/people's houses.

So here's the deal: Should I get a G4 powerbook, or an HP Pavillion (or some other PC)

If I get ProTools on PC can I transfer the files to ProTools on a Mac? Does one perform clearly better than the other? Is there anything I should know to help me choose? Any help would be much apreciated. Thanks!

Oh also...an HP comparable to the G4 powerbook costs about $400 less than the powerbook. So it's looking pretty good right now. But I still need some input to make the decision.
 
Here is my amateur opinion. I don't know why, but my Mac G4 400 MHz Mac seems to do as good if not better than my P4 2.66GHz PC from Dell for audio. I have debated making the switch fully to Mac. The only thing that holds me back is that they are so DAMN expensive. Oh yeah, and you can't build them on your own (as far as I know). Hopefully someone more knowledgable will give you advice. Ultimately, however, it is a matter of opinion. Good luck with your decision.
 
Go for the mac.. I've been a happy switcher for almost two years now... OS X is a no brainer for experienced windows users once you get through the first day or two... There are some great sites like macosxhints.com with all sorts of good tips on commands and things of that sort..

True, protools is dual platform, but if the school uses all macs, and you use a PC, you run the risk of some sort of incompatibility or corruption inbetween.. Despite the fact that I think macs are superior machines in all aspects (hold gaming) it's probably your safest bet to go with what your school uses.. I Love my mac, I don't see myself going back to PC...

Thanks for all the info! My only concern now is that the PowerBook's fastest option for the drive is 5400 rpm. I know the latest version of LE recomends faster than 5400. Is that going to be a problem, or will it just slow things down a little. And does anyone know of any after-market 7200 rpm drives for the powerbook?
 
A couple thoughts:

1) I wouldn't buy any computer made by HP.

2) If your school uses macs you might be able to get an "educational discount" by purchasing one through the school. In the past, Apple has made a lot of deals for students, teachers, and schools.

3) You can get a 7200 rpm firewire drive, like this one.

I agree! Now, I have never used a Mac,I have just listened to others on this site and in person but my brand new Dell 2.8gig pross. 2 gig memory gets bogged down at times and it just seems like that is insane! I mean for a machine of its power! :confused: Maybe, it may be more an isue with mine of how the hard drives and the CD ,DVD burners are set up. Slave, master and which to what hard drive. I dont know, its beyond me but I'd go Mac.

i believe that www.apple.com offers educational discounts right on their website.

another thing to consider is that there are a lot more RTAS plugs for macs than for PC. if i had the $$, i would switch.
 
at the risk of sounding redundant with all the other posts...


GET THE MAC!
