Price wise the portable recorders are a steal. You get a mini-computer, two mics, two preamps, two converters all for the price of what you'd pay for a single mic. Without all the reliability issues of traditional computers. Not the highest end of gear, but a far cry from most consumer grade gear. And you can use them as MP3 players when not recording. And some of them double as USB soundcards.

Never have imagined portable recorders would have better mics than my camcorder mic.
I'm looking now at the Zoom H2 :)

The lack of motor noise from the camcorder makes a big difference, assuming you're capturing the sound on tape. If you're doing a live capture over FireWire or something, then it probably won't sound that different, and your problem is probably placement.
