Hi all. I'm working on two songs that I recorded with my Yamaha MD8 and a Belarri 503 tube compressor...that I'm still learnng how to use. LOL

Anyway, I'm looking for general feedback on the songs in general, and the recording in general (bear in mind the MP3 file quality was reduced to ease download).

Folks into shoe gazer, Brit pop, and moody music in general :) might be most interested.

Thanks in advance for the good and the bad. :)

David

the link to download the MP3s is: http://passkeymusic.com/index.html

I listened to Rusty. The drums have a distortion that I don't hear elsewhere so I assume it's intentional. While a little grunge can be cool, here it was way too much. Nice pop tune.

Word just in from Officer Hai Phai at the Vienam branch of the International Center for Good Taste in Signalprocessing " Youre compressor liscense is revoked"

good layering, good air, just let the music breath as well as you let the vocals thru...if you DO want to squash it that much, how about setting the release control for WAY longer

TrackRat and Pipeline

TrackRat and Pipeline (why do I feel like I'm addressing a G.I. JOE Team? LOL :)

Thanks for the comments. You guys touched on personal feelings about the recordings that I already had, so I'm probably on the right track in terms of what to correct, huh?

Thanks again for checking the stuff out!

"TrackRat and Pipeline (why do I feel like I'm addressing a G.I. JOE Team?"

now you know
and knowing is half the battle
yo joe!

ROFL Pipeline!

I keep waiting to hear some electronic music guy call himself MC Destro or DJ Serpentor!

LOL
:)

Nice song and great production, but it sounded like the kick was clipping just a little from where I'm sitting.

twist

TWIST

Thanks much, TWIST. I wonder if the clipping didn't happen somehow during MP3ing the track. You mean right at the beginning, right? I don't think that's on my original master.

Thanks for the kind words, Midwest neighbor!
:)

Nice melody on "Rusty" but the distortion from the clipping signal on the kick drum renders it un-listenable.

The second song seems to be corrupt. It wont stream and when I downloaded it it still wouldnt play...got an "Class not registered (Error=80040154)".....is it a valid mp3 file?

KRAMER

That's weird, I did have trouble with that file the other day, but I just relinked to another version this morning and it worked fine when I tested downloading it on another machine. I wonder if anyone else is having trouble...?

thanks tho...

I downloaded the other one and it's hosed. I can't get it to play.

I'm looking into it.

It worked fine this morning. When good notes go bad (corruption, etc) LOL

Thanks for the headsUP...

David

Same as everyone else....cool song....good production and mixing but it clips too much.

Thanks Lieutenant! I probably just need to mixdown another copy. I think my level on the drum track was just too high. i think it was another casualty of my "listening" to it so much that I didn't actually "hear" the song anymore. Know what I mean?

Thanks again,
David

Haven't read the replies yet.

Listened to Rusty, and the kick is distorting all the way through. Don't know if that's intentional, but it's a little distracting to me. I like the breathy vocs here, I think they work well for the tune. The overall mix sounds pretty mono... there could be a better spread with all those sounds to work with.

Hi pglewis

Thanks for the feedback. Yeah, my goal this week is to remix a new version. I didn't hear the distorted kick last time, probably due to ear fatigue. LOL Were you able to download the Julia song? Seems a lot of people are having trouble with it, but everyone I know over here can hear it. Hmmm.....

Same prob with Julia, the kick is distorting. I'm not sure it's a digital over... might be artifacts from overcompressing. I think pipeline hit the nail on that. Not much else I can tell at 96kbps. Don't know what's actually in the mix and what's just encoding crud.

Cool tunes. I'd agree with everyone else. Ease up on the processing and give the songs a little more air and punch. Great atmosheres.

Thanks Guys

So, what have I learned? Over-eagerness to use my new compressor = mixes that can fit inside a thimble. LOL

As they say, less is more.

Well, now its back to the studio. Thanks much to everyone for the feedback!
