Shockmount?

Handeling noise is a pretty big issue with condensers...purchasing shockmounts is a good idea...you can make one for the 2021 for cheap.
 
Having shock mounts isn't going to hurt. And since they both appear to be cardioid pattern, I'd recommend it. That and the given mounts appear to be hard plastic, not rubberized plastic. Although mainly because they're not OMNI, shock mounts will be needed.

But it does depend on what and where you'll be recording. A drummer, most certainly. In that apartment above the dance club, definitely. In the country with a singer who doesn't tap their foot or anything, in a building with no A/C, maybe not.
 
Personally I think that there is no reason to go without a shock mount.. sure there are times that you can get away with it.. but why even worry about it to that extent.. you're far better off just getting one so you don't have to worry about it ever.. AT makes a good cheap shock mount that is usually included.. I'm surprised that it isn't inlcuded here.. At any rate, you will need one more often then not if you ask me. Good luck.

are shock mounts a "necessity"? no

do they help? of course.

lets put it this way there are times when you wont need it. i mean you would never "need" to take it off but you could get away with not having one. but if you find one fairly priced then go for it.

if you're recording vocals the you should get a pop filter as well. there really isn't any getting around that though so DEFINITELY get one. It muffles the pop of "P"'s and "B"'s and also helps with hissing from "T"'s and "S"'s.

not to mention singers who spit.
 
I have two of the AT2020's and I have a shockmount for both of them. I use them for drum overheads so for me it's especially important.

However - don't buy the Audio Technica shockmount! It's way overpriced. Instead, I got this one made by Samson for only $29.95 and it fits absolutely perfectly. I can post a picture of my AT2020 in the shockmount if you want.

I have no idea about the mics on the bottom rung of the companies lines...but if one is going to throw in a shock mount then I guess Id take that deal...you can allways bargain with the guy on the phone to get them both for the same price.
 
What are you planning to do with the mic? We can't suggest which mic to choose without knowing what you plan to record with it.
 
Basically whichever package is most versatile and will sound good on a wide variety of stuff.

Basically since I can get a shockmount + two AT mics for $180 or a shockmount + two MXL mics for $200, are the MXL mics worth the extra $20?

Personally, I would take the AT over the marshals any day.. In my experience (going from marshall mics to an AT3035) There is no competition.. not that there couldn't be given your voice and applications of course, but for me I would think in most cases the AT would be a better mic.. truth of the matter is thought of course that you just don't know until you try.. best of luck, hope this has been helpful.. the AT was a drastic improvement for me over the marshall.
 
I'd go for the AT if only because of reputation and potential resale value. Everyone has a cheap MXL already, so they don't want to buy a used one. Or maybe that's just my jaded perception.

As I wonder if they make a shock mounted stereo bar, instead of working on a per mic basis? Probably cheaper / more reliable to go per mic.
