I'm looking at picking up a pair of mxl 603s and was wondering if people tend to use the shock mounts with them when using them as overheads. I can get them with or without the shockmounts so I'm wondering if there's any point spending the extra $60
Thanks

I always use them with shockmounts, unless they impede placement. There are a lot of floor vibrations when playing drums, so isolating is a good idea, imo.

absolutely get and use the shockmounts. they shouldn't run you $60. $30 would be more realistic--i think i got a pair of 603 shockmounts and a single V67 shockmount for $50 total a few years ago.

the 603s fare a LOT better (in terms of sound) when you've got em in shockmounts than not--the amount of low end garbage that's transferred through the stand to the mics is greatly reduced. you WILL notice an improvement. especially if they're on the same floor/surface as the drumset.

cheers,

You shouldnt get any floor rumble in the mics if you make sure the middle pole of the stand isnt touching the floor.

Ive only ever used NT2s as OHs and I need to use the shockmounts to get them on the stand.

Thanks for the replies, I ended up buying the ones without shock mounts so I'll try to hunt down a deal on a couple and see if I can find them under $60
:D

Anybody used the tensimount shock mounts? They look pretty cool on the web site and the price is right (19.95) My only question is do they ever slip out? Anybody have some experience with these?
thanks

My advice is "don't cheap out." Just get the "made-for-the-603" MXL shockmounts.

$19.95 mounts will be worth exactly what you pay for them.

I agree, get the ones made for the MXL's. I have the 604's and since I couldn't wait, I bought what guitar center had in the store. It was the "Sterling Audio Universal shockmount for Sterling Audio ST31/ST33/ST44 mics".

They work, but they don't hold the mics as tight as I would like. I'm very comfortable that they will never fall out, but I wish I would have bought the MXL shockmounts in the first place.

I took the shock mounts off of a pair of ksm 32s and never noticed any difference . .they look cooler with shock mounts I guess.

If the only worry of getting cheap shockmounts is how tight it can hold the mic, then theres always sticky tape.
Why pay more than you really need to.
I made a pop shield for next to nothing. A coat hanger and a pair of "Clean" tights.
Works perfectly. No difference IMO.
