Better Than You
I was wondering if there is any real advantage to using a shock mount on a Shure SM57 to mick a guitar cab?

Who told you that you needed a shock mount for your Shure SM57?

bah...

It may looks good :)

I cant see any advantage. There is also no disadvantage!

I just happened to see one online. It never crossed my mind to use one, so I starting thinking I was missing something. It does look nice, but I couldn't really see a need for it.

It all depends on what you're doing with the 57. If you're recording and are concerned about picking up vibrations then use a shock mount. For general live purpose use of a 57 a shock mount isn't neccesary.

I use a shock mount with all my mics in the studio but only because I have them.

Real men don't use 'em-When you find what it takes to shock a 57, let me know.-Richie

I would be recording with it. I understand the use of the shockmount with my LD vocal mic, but I've used the 57s live in the past for years and have never been able to damage one myself. A buddy of mine does have one that doesn't really work well anymore, but it is broken in half (don't ask...it's a longer story than the one about his Les Paul being dropped from a train).
Now I do think high end equipment should look high end, and do have to admit that I am tempted to pick up the shockmount just for the reason that it really does look nice. However, I really can't think of any reason why it would be "needed". Thought maybe I had been doing something wrong for years.

I'm talking about using a shock mount to keep vibrations from making it into your recordings. A shockmount isn't neccesary to prevent damage to your 57, that isn't an issue, but if you have any external sounds/low frequencies (planes/traffic/trains/rumble of any sort/even foot tapping) aside from your source sound, a shock mount will help prevent vibrations from traveling through your mic stand into your microphone and into your recordings.

Vibrations can also travel up the mic cable and into the mic.

Maybe.... but last I checked a microphone stand was a weeeee bit stiffer than the mic cable. ;)

Today I saw a guy in Guitar Center selling a shockmount for Shure SM57, I was wondering who would want a shockmount for SM57 well, came across this thread and guess there are more than one................ :)

I have a little problem buying from Guitar Center. I bought a MK-319, and asked "what is your return policy?" They replied "Non exsitent for any reason". I found this odd, so I asked another salesperson....same exact answer word for word. For now on I ask this question before they have my money. I also go to Sam Ash for now on which is half a block down from Guitar Center.
