Cool tune musically but lyrically it doesn't matter.Whether it be politics, religion or ancient alien conspiracy, after Dec.21 2012 ...

Thanks guys. I love such inspired posts :P

This is a record for me. I have never in my history of posting songs on Sound Click been #1 on the 2ND day of posting a song for any sub-genre. Matter of fact never past 5Th or 6Th place for a sub-genre with in the first few days. Never even gotten 1st place, after years of using that site. Now I understand that 99.9% of the shit on sound click sucks ass, but I'll take what I can get :D

Don't worry it wont get to my head, I'll always be the same Foul Phil that you have all grown to love :P

Charts position

» highest in charts: # 40 (232,981 songs currently listed in Rock)
» highest in sub-genre: # 1 (17,036 songs currently listed in Rock > Rock n Roll)

Listened again - good, good song with the previous caveat of course.

Well I can't really "hear" what you guys are saying. Like one guy said the guitars too loud, but I don't hear it lol. The strings are cheesy? I thought they were back enough not to matter LOL. Drums don't fit? Don't have a choice about it... When I listen on crappy systems the vocals sound too loud to me. Will I go back and fix it? No. I'm going to have to call it a done song. Everyone that isn't a home recording enthusiast or a fan a my Death Metal stuff, thinks it's real good. Most of them think it's pro and that I went into a recording studio and can't believe it was done in my living room.

I know it's a lazy attitude to have, but just keep in mind, next time I do a song like this I will take all these things into consideration. A few more songs and there may be no more complaints :D

You're not gonna please everyone and everyone has different ideas as to what is right or good in a mix. I personally don't think the vocals are too loud, but that's just one more opinion.

Here's what I do with mix critiques: If I get a few people saying they don't like a certain aspect of my mix, and I can objectively agree with them, then I fix it. If I get one or two people saying they don't like something, and I think they're fucking crazy and have broken ears, then I leave it alone. Mix advice is only as good as the people giving it and/or if their stuff sounds good or not. That's up to you to decide. If RAMI tells me my kick drum sounds like ass or my snare is too compressed, I'll fix it. If MervynPerving tells me my kick drum sounds like ass, then I ignore it. You also get a lot of people that will bash or praise you solely based off what they think of your online persona. It's up to you to decide what is good feedback, bad feedback, and what you wanna fix. Sometimes you just gotta stand your ground.

Yeah, most critiques are just personal opinions when the mix sounds this good.

I personally don't like that kick for this style, but if I wasn't listening as a critic, and just listening, it wouldn't distract me, or make me think "this song blows". Whatever, if you like it roll with it. It's your music, do what you want with it.

Yeah it's really hard to pinpoint some things because unless you have the experience to know exactly what type of sound your going for the options are limitless. When you're limited on gear sometimes you have to make sacrifices to get the job done. Some of the things, like the drums, where just chosen because there wasn't any better sounding options, not immediately anyway. When you take what you have and make it the best you can, for only the purpose of FUN, the results can be amazing. That's just the sound side of things. The artistic expression side of things can be just as complicated. Especially when you think you're loud and clear and people don't understand. I don't take the criticism of any aspect of what I'm doing personally. Even if someone doesn't like my stuff just because they don't like me for some odd reason LOL. I do take all feedback into consideration though. Especially if it sounds reasonable, doesn't mean I'll make any changes if I have no idea where to start hahah.

Overall its quite good,
I think you have a good voice with the potential to be great, the tone, the strength, technique are the foundation of a really good male tenor.

I would have tracked some harmonies in this song in a few places.

I actually think the voice is too low ( it falls behind the mix in some spots and the lows are rolled off too much for a lead vox IMO).
The vocal is what makes the song catchy for me.

I would absolutely explore some classic rock songs, you'll only get better.

Pete

I haven't read any of the comments, but I think this is pretty damned good. I only listened through one time too, but I liked it so it must be pretty decent. This definitely is not like anything you reguarly do. Hell, I like the crap out of it. Good song Phil.

Thank you guys I appreciate it. I think some of the problem is my mic collection is pretty shitty right now. I actually didn't roll off any of the low end and even went as far as trying to EQ some low and mid-low frequencies into the vocals to help them sound a little thicker. Of course I didn't want to get too carried away with it so it's very subtle EQ. My budget is very thin right now, as it is for many people these days. I'm going to try a Sure SM7 next once I can spare the $350. I spent a lot of time researching and reading what people say about it and it should do well for my Death Metal vocals and hopefully clean vocals as well. It'll be a while and I have a ton of music projects to be working on, just wish I could get my hands on some REAL gear. For what I have I'm doing pretty good I think.

I also tried some harmonies, but couldn't really think of anything that would fit. I need to do some research on how to different types of vocal harmonies. If I could find a better singer I wouldn't be singing. I'm basically doing it to have a complete song.

In addition to what everyone else said I would get rid of the pitch correction where it is, or at least make it a little less...noticable (very noticable around :35)

That you singing, Phil? Sounds good!
Voice needs to cut thru better especially in the chorus. The guitar playing style sounds a bit dull to me, but if that's what you were going for, that's cool. Solo is nice but I found it a bit too long. Drums sound very good to me. Ending could have been a little more spectacular. But these are just my ideas, it's still a great song.;)

Thanks man. Thanks man I'll take it into consideration for the next song :P

It's been said before, but the metal drums sound out of place; the metal influence is hard to miss. The kick drum part is too busy for this kind of song I think, not to mention being a little loud. Everything else sounds good, and you send a strong message, people do need to wake up.

Also this is more on the compositional side of things, and based on my own musical tastes, but at around 1:32 the string/synth part clashes with the rhythm guitar. To my ears, it is an unresovled suspension and I'm expecting the strings to resolve down a semi tone, but alas, it never does. Everything else sounds awesome though!
