Well, while taking some time to focus on playing live with the new band, I've been able to squeeze in a recording of a new song.

This one has a reggae-ish sort of vibe to it...and before anyone complains that there's a lot of background noise in the beginning...it's meant to be there (for various reasons). This is all done with acoustic guitars, bass, vocals, and a drum machine...oh, yeah, and a shaker. During my first mix down, I did manage to some how save over my original lead vocal (doh!), but fortunately I had a couple other (not as good) takes to chose from when mixing this version.

Let me know what you think of the mix and basically anything else you might want to comment on.

That rocks. The ending is a little weird, though.. It sounds chopped off. It sounds like the guitars start to ring out, the singer takes a breath, and then... it's over.

Well, yeah, I was a little slow on the fader to cut the tune. The bass player did a little jam at the end as kind of a screw around, and didn't leave much of a window for me to fade out. The breath was more of a chunk I forgot to cut out. There's really nothing at the end there. For some reason, I tend to have odd endings...Thanks for responding!

Hey Tonio!

That was actually me slamming the door. I had just set up the lead guitarist to play in a room by himself with the recorder rolling, and was headed back into the other room to jam with the bass player while he recorded. Just when I got out of the room, I ran into the bass player half way, which held me up...I was trying to shut the door quietly (it sticks a bit), but by the time i dealt with the bass player, who was trying to see what was going on in my makeshift studio, the song had already started, and I knew i had this loud slam over the beginning. I thought I recorded over it, but it some how became part of the track I decided to use with the lead guitarist...after hearing that in there a couple times it seemed kind of naked without it, so I just kind of incorporated it into it...much like he (the lead guitarist) heard it as it happened. DAMN! that's a lot of writing to describe a door slamming...sorry.

As for the drum machine, that should be on the right beat. It's pretty common for reggae to do that...where the main guitar strum is on an off beat from the snare or bass drum.

Hey Bob,
Sound good...I kept hearing spots where different instruments could come in to spice it up...
at :50 the guitar on the right could be an electric...that would turn the listeners head a bit...
also at 1:15 A hammond organ would add to the flavor...
and maybe some timbale type drum fills every now and then...
of course you may like it fine the way it is...
if that is the case...never mind...

RLD: Hey, thanks for checking this tune out, and thanks for the ideas! I like to try and keep stuff as simple as I can when doing most of my tunes. I usually end up going over the top with add ons, and end up making it sound stupid. I actually had another track with some conga's and this funky Indian drum. I burned a copy with that, and listened to it the next morning and couldn't stand it. It sounded way too busy (to me). Yeah, keys could be kinda cool, but unfortunatelyI don't know anyone that plays keyboards. Thanks!
