Ok, I keep on hearing people who don't have Motu equipment saying that it has problems with PCs and not with macs. And then I hear people who DO have Motu equipment (like me) saying that they have had no problems with PC systems at all. I want to settle this once and for all.

If you own Motu equipment, have you had any problems using it on PC's? I'm not asking for people's opinions, I'm asking for their experiences.

No problems what so ever here.
828mkII works like a charm.
All of my machines are Intel based & use a Texas Instruments IEEE1394 controller.

As with any interface, I can see that some people will experience issues due to the fact of the many different configurations of PC's.
Once you find a configuration that works ... it just plain works.

And I'm happily sailing along with Pentiums and the 875P chipsets.

In the interest of trying to establish any patterns of problems...

I'm also using an 828mkII on my HP notebook, which also has a Texas Instruments IEEE1394 controller.

Some of the older MOTU hardware just will not work with certain chipsets, in my case VIA chipsets.

I have an 828mkII running on an H/P notebook with Windows XP Home, an AthlonXP 1.8 ghz processor, and a Texas Instruments firewire controller.

No problems at all, I like it so much as a matter of fact, I'm thinking about getting an 896HD to go with it.

:)

Anyone that has a MOTU running on a PC will most likely say they have not had problems because they probably haven't. However, those of those that had one and now don't probably switched becasue they did have problems;)

Older MOTU stuff definately had some problems with certain VIA chipsets. That problem no longer exists with current ones. I had a MOTU 2408 mk2. It worked fine on three different VIA chipsets, but never worked on one of them. My biggest complaint is that MOTU tech support wanted me to pay shipping both ways to send them not only my MOTU unit, but my whole Tower so they could figure out what was wrong. I guess it was pretty gracious of them to offer to spend a few weeks figuring it out for free for me. I am still shocked that they even reccomended I pay to ship them my whole computer. Maybe they think I have 5 or 6 kicking around and that I could do without it for a few weeks or more. And that I was really looking forward to paying shipping both ways:D

The only problem I have had with my 828mkii is trying to figure out CueMix from the crappy manual.

I've installed my 2408 mkII on two different PCs and have never had one single problem.

Where they via shipsets?

No, both PIII Coppermines. Once upon a time I was running a VIA chipset and couldn't get any pro audio card (Alesis ADAT card, Yamaha DSP Factory, Creamware Pulsar, etc). That experience pretty much soured me on VIA chipsets of any vintage.

Well, there you go. general consensus at the time was the the issue was with the VIA chipset. MOTU agreed, not that I'd trust their opinion on anything.

Gateway M520 P4 2.8Ghz widescreen laptop (with T.I. firewire chipset), Motu828mkII and a Glyph GT050 firewire drive.

ZERO problems.

MOTU 828 mk II. Toshiba Satellite 2415-s204. Cardbus firewire interface. Works great. Installed WinXP service pack 2 by accident (automatic update). Did not work. Uninstalled service pack 2. Works great.

I had issues with the PCI 324 but the 424 worked just fine.

I hear that Tascam and MOTU products don't always play well but the problems I've had with the 2 were minimal and either fixed themselves or ended up being a user error  .

That has been ny experience too. My PCI-324 just refuses to work on newer computer systems, but the PCI424 card works fine.. I am flat-out unwilling to spend $300 just to get something I already paid for to work. Motu is unwilling to even meet anyone halfway on this - you want your unit that uses a PCI-324 card to work? Buy a new card.

I will never buy another Motu product again. Ever.

My biggest gripe with MOTU has not been the compatibility issues from the past. My problem with them is that they offered some of the poorest customer service I have EVER encountered.

Motu's FAQs state explicitly that they REQUIRE a TI or Lucent firewire chipset for proper operation.
(Many other interfaces also state they require TI to work)

I ran my 828mkII for 5 years on my Gateway XP laptop with built-in TI firewire with ZERO problems.
Now working on my iMac with zero problems too.

I always found MOTU drivers and hardware to be some of the most stable I have ever come across on PC. I used to have the PCI-424 with a 24i/o and it was rock solid for years.

Cheers :)

Doesn't matter how old the question is, there are still people out there like myself buying and using Motu units
and the fact that they REQUIRE a TI or Lucent fw chipset under Windows is still relevant.
