setting up windows xp a little more...beyond tweaks!

alright, so before...I had my comp set up really nice.

2 hardware profiles, and 2 user profiles.

under the RECORDING hardware profile, and the RECORDING user profile, all unneeded things would be off and/or would not start with hte computer.

aka:
no anti virus
no unused pci cards (netwoork card, IEEE, etc.)
no "macdrive" software (lets me read mac formatted drives)
no "security center" or "auto updates" or anytihng like that
no print spooler, other network services (like certain svchost.exe uses...)
etc. etc., the list goes on.

I remember doing all this last time really easily. just through control panels, and msconfig, etc....
and as long as I was under the correct profiles at the times the changes were made, they would be saved to THAT hardware or user profile.



now since my reformat, nothing seems to save with those. If I make a change one place with a startup program or service, like through msconfig, it effects all profiles, regaurdless.

what am i forgetting??
 
are you sure you mean profiles? I think you want a dual-boot configuration, not profiles. maybe I'm misunderstanding you...

do you mean 2 installations of the OS on 2 different partitions of your disk?
 
nope, same op system.

I made 2:
HARDWARE profiles
and
USER/LOGIN profiles

last time, that's all i needed to do...i am not as lucky this time though.

I have a dual-boot configuration, which pretty much gets you to the same place you want to be. Why don't you try that? You have to set up two different partitions, and install XP twice.

I've never worked with hardware profiles and all that in XP, so I can't help you there. I think alot of guys are using a dual-boot configuration for audio work.
 
I know what you mean. I do have two different hardware configurations - one for general use, and one for recording. The only difference, however, is that the network card is disabled in the recording profile.

Unfortunately, XP hardware profiles don't have anything to do with the software configurations, i.e., what software is running. For that, as others have said, you'll need a dual-boot configuration.

I've known people who have "nervous laughs" - my dad laughs after he asks waitstaff at resteraunts for anything - but I've never seen one in print until now...


I'm just messing with you - but seriously. :) ;)
 
Create 2 profiles (users in win xp).
When you install software (ex. antivirus) specify it for 'this user only' and not 'for all users'. Then do a few tweaks using msconfig or the control panel for the 'recording' profile and you should be good to go.
 
I don't think I'd use msconfig to edit the services.

Disable services using the XP Administration tools "Services" item. When you alter the properties of each service, isn't there the option for it to affect the current profile or all?

yeah that's what i was thinking...i guess i'll just keep looking to find it...haha
