Hello gurus,

Just bought some new equipment and thought i would try setting it all up myself... 4 hours later and im now wanting to throw it all out of the window so if someone could please help id appreciate it.

I just got a presonus firebox and im using a mackie 1402 VLZ mixer. My idea was to route the firebox through the mixer so i could just plug the instruments/mics into that. SO... first i decided to get sound coming out so i hooked up 2 trs cables running from the "Main out" on the soundcard into channels 5+6 "Line in" so i now operate the sound from those channels. I now have 2 "LINE IN" on my firebox which i assume need to go on something 'out' on the desk. Im pretty sure ive stuck the 2 cables in every slot possible, but still no success.. Do i put it in the "MAIN OUT L+R" on the desk? That seemed like the most obvious, then i could plug the instruments/mics in whichever channel i wanted? Ive checked through all the manuals but it doesnt help me in anyway...

Would really appreciate it if someone could help me out here! :o

Thanks in advance

Alright, you have me confused. The FireBox, for all intents, is now your soundcard (that is, you will bypass your onboard soundcard for recording purposes by plugging the FireBox into the computer). Now, you have a couple of options.

1) Mic/Instrument-->FireBox-->Computer - it has built in preamps (I think) that you can use. if you don't need a lot of inputs or complex routing, this is the easy way to go.

2) Mic/Intstrument-->Mackie-->Firebox-->Computer - In this case, you're using the Mackie preamps and using the FireBox as a soundcard. You would connect the main L/R outs (TRS or RCA, usu) to the line inputs on the Firebox.

A couple of things to check: Make sure your FireBox is properly connected to your computer and that it is setup as a sound device in the control panel. Also, in your recording software, make sure that the Firebox is set up as the input sound device for the software (as it will usually default to your computer's built-in soundcard).

Also, the line-outs on the Firebox are for connecting monitors to listen. Or, you could route those back to the Mackie and attach your monitors there.

Hi Scrubs,

Thanks for getting back to me! Right, i connected the MAIN OUT of the mackie to the 2 LINE IN on my Firebox. I also have 2 TRS cables running from my MAIN OUT on the firebox into channel 5+6 on my desk so i can operate the sound from these channels. so its basically set up how you said there, but when i plug my bass or microphone in im getting sound from the monitors, but no signal in Cubase. When i plug the mic/bass directly into the firebox, i am getting signal... its quite strange, any ideas?

oh, anyway, sounds like the way you got it set up, you are going to re record whatever is being played back....

why do you need a mixer? if you are wanting to use it just to add more pres, i would use the two on the firebox, then hook the main out of the mackie to the line inputs. i would just run directly to your amp or speakers out of the firebox.

Try disconnecting the link from the outs of the firebox back to the mixer. See if you can get a signal from the mixer into the firebox and into your computer. If not, check cables. Make sure you have good gain on the master bus at the mixer level and that the outputs support balanced (TRS) cables. Also, see if there are online manuals and or startup guides for these products.
