I am a musician with good computer skills. I currently have no synth as I was skint and had to sell it! I am interested in home recording and wondered what is the cheapest way of setting up my PC to do it. This will be for real instruments and not just samples. Any ideas?

what kind of instruments?
electric guitar, bass, external keyboard
or
acoustic guitar, voice, analog drum?

In other words: do you need a mic hardware or only signal input?

Welcome to this site!

As you are just starting out with PC recording, it may be a good idea to surf the different pages of this site first.

But more importantly, the search function of this BBS can be very helpful. You will find that most questions (especially general ones) have been asked more than a few times.

Good luck!

cheapest way?

n-Tracks multitrack recording software: £30 approx.

Behringer MX602 mixer: £60 approx.

plug your synth into the mixer, then plug the line-outs from the mixer into the line-in of your soundcard using the right cable. £100 all up.
