Ok I just got an audiophile 2496, now I know theres some setting up to do but I don't know exactly what...

One thing is I can't plug in my headphones to the card, so I am using onboard sound for playback, for MIDI and recording i'm using the audiphile 2496

my setup shure SM57 -> 4track tape recorder -> audiophile2496

My question is, before this when i would plug my 4track into my onboard sounds mic in, the quality was noticeablely better...

Right the level is very low than before compared to a level-noise ratio, the more I want the level to be higher the more noise I'm getting, this wasnt the case before...

Also I believe I am having latency issues, how can i test my card for latency?
I believe its the soundcard casue my computer is fast enough for this kind of simple 1-4 track recording
athlon xp2200, 512MB ddr ram, 2 HDs

Hi no-sleep -

Do you have a line-in on your onboard sound. I think that's where you really want to be plugged in anyway.

Latency... Well, what software are you using to record? Sometimes you gotta mess around with the parameters to get it to work right. Sometimes no matter what you do, the combination of hardware, drivers, and software will never work to your liking. You might want to look into a nice USB sound device. You can get them from anywhere between $175-600 on average and you can get more inputs (1/4" and XLR).

No, you don't want to use the onboard line-in. The whole idea of an audiophile is to replace the crappy onboard soundcard for something decent.

Steering towards an USB device is poor advice. The Audiophile is a great entry-level recording card. USB works ok for some but gives endless headaches to others.
I understand that the 4track is used for its mic preamps. Hook the outputs (at line level) up to the line-ins of the audiophile. If the incoming levels are low, crank up the gain on the 4track.

Whew.... I'd hate to hear what it sounds like now if it sounded better plugging your 4 track into your onboard mic in...

First... don't use you onboard sound for anything since you have an audiophile (which is a wonderful card I might add). Secondly... definately don't ever plug line level signal into a mic input as you've mentioned.

What software and OS are you using and we can get you all sorted out...

Can you explain why you think your experiencing latency? Are you using software synths or direct monitoring of effects on your incoming signal? I just want to make sure your not mistaking latency for something else... which I personally think is the case.

Sorry! It's been awhile I've been trying to format and set up other things with this card...

I'm using Windows XP, softwares I'm using are... for recording CoolEdit, and for MIDI, Cubase VSTi

I'm having the same problems with MIDI, the level is too low... Is there anyway I can put up the volume? I was fiddling with the M-Audio control panel it doesnt work... I don't see a function there to control the input...

Is there a way with Cubase?

Latency seems to be fine, 12MS... Can I do better?

Oh yea the latency issue i was talking about previously was because my video card only had 4MB, hah, i upgraded to a 128MB card, now it doesn't happen anymore. It wasn't latency I guess, more like skipping...
