Setting up an audio computer

sorry if Ive missed you saying it but you are using the line6 asio driver and not asio 4 all??

Yeah I am using the line 6 asio driver, I read that 5ms is unnoticable, I wish I could shave a second of that and not have to run it at 128. I'm not going to get the terminology right here, but Im running at 24bit, 44100. on the other side of the menu there is a couple of selection boxes on is the bit rate, which I have set to 24, and one which is the sample rate? which I can set to 128, 512, 1024 etc changng this one changes the latency at 128 I get 6ms. What does changing the sample rate(?) effect the audio? sorry if that doesn't make sence but im not that knowlage able about all this stuff.

I was doing some work yesterday and I added Reverene as an insert on an acuostic guitar on a project where there are in total 4 tracks, and it just overloaded. That when I thourght to my self "This aint right" my laptop loaded it no probs, having a mess around I found the cubase task in task manager and went on 'set affinity' and unticked all the cores apart from 2, and it instantly solved my overloading issues. Does anybody know why? I presumed that having 8 cores running a program would increase its preformance, not the other way round. Also would it make my pc run better if I set cubase to say cpu1 and cpu2 and then opened up kontakt and set that to cpu3 and cpu4 for example?

This looks more like a buffer size. The higher the buffer, the lower the latency.

And your laptop has plenty of "power" so that's not what it is.

one thing you can do is reduce the number of services that are running, but before you do that make a record of all services and their original states, i use a speadsheet for this, after you record that info start disabling services starting with the ones you are sure you wont be needing, such as certain networking services if the system is not normally online

theres some of trial and error involved, dont take this lightly, take your time and do not rush, only disable one or two services at a time and then see how things work, make this a month long project at least, you may find that for certain apps to run you may need to temporarily reenable certain services, for example certain Sony apps will not start if the Terminal Services service isnt running, the Network adapters also will not show up in Control Panel if Network Connections isnt running, burning CD's may be depenadant on the IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service running, etc etc

Im running XP Pro and i only have 5 services running and my system is happy, no problems at all in well over 2 years since i finished optimizing

DCOM Server Process Launcher
Event Log
Plug and Play
Remote Procedure Call
Windows Audio

when i check for system updates i reenable the following temporarily...

Automatic Updates
Background Inteligent Transfer Service

so check out/research which system services you dont need running as one way to optimize things, but again... dont take playing with services lightly, make notes as you go on what is dependant upon what, record your every move so you can backtrack if needed, good luck

One thing that I figured out improves performance is if In task manager I go to the cubase process, under properties I can change what system it opperated under for example, xp sp1,2 vista, sp 1,2 I changed it to vista and cubase runs far better, Like I said earlier, I set the affinity of cubase to run on CPU's 1 and 2 and I had far better performance when I did this, but it automatically resets it self after I've done it :(. Another thing to do with quality, I know that my toneport can handle 24bit, but It only says 16bit on the driver menu, and if I do deeper into the computer I can change it to 24bit but as soon as I select 24bit 44100 I get an error message saying that I cant change it. However In cubase Im set up to record at 24bit, So which resolution am I recording on?
