Hi
I recently baught an M-Audio Duo interface (with 2 mic-pre amps built in) and I baught a Shure KSM27 condenser mic. With it, I baught an Alesis Compressor/Limitor. I use my computer as my recorder on CUBASE SX. I just wanted to know if there was anything that was vital for a beginner recorder like me. Small accessories to big machinery, anything vital. Also Id like to know how to set up my computer studio up what goes into what?
Thanks

i already have sony monitors but i forgot to mention that. I just want to know what else i need to buy. Im recording, acoustic and electric guitar, vocals, bass guitar, piano. I will do drums via midi. Also i want to know how to connect everything up

Well, you have everything you need to start, I guess. Maybe you should spend that $200 on a small diaphragm condensor like a mxl 603 or oktava mk012, and a sm57 to give you some more mic options. You're going to find that all of your gear has its limitations, and as you figure out what these are, you'll probably want to upgrade/buy new gear, but for now, that should do it. Unless that Duo has an insert on each channel, you won't be able to use that compressor, but Cubase should have some plugins you can use. Connect the mics or line outs from your gear to the Duo inputs & connect the monitors to the outputs. Plug the usb into your computer & you're ready to roll. Wait a minute...I think the duo is a/d only. What are you using for d/a (audio output from your computer)? This is what you need to connect your monitors to. If this is the case, maybe you should get a small mixer so you can monitor your input and the output from the computer at the same time. Am I right about this?

No
Im actually monitoring thru my sound cards out put to an external sound system. Can you tell me why I cant use the compressor?
Thanks
Omar
The duo has two XLR inputs and 2 1/4'' inputs and can record two simultaneous tracks at once

I assume your compressor is going to want a line level signal, so you can't plug your mic or instrument directly into it & you have no channel inserts to patch it into. I may be wrong about this, try it before you take my word. You should maybe look into a small cheap mixer with channel inserts. Also, what is your external sound system? If you are monitoring through your computer's stock sound card into a home stereo system, this will be a source of much frustration when you go to mix. This will probably be the first place you want to upgrade.
