Setting soundcard/amp output levels

Hi, I was wondering what would be the optimal way to set output levels for mixing? Right now I have my soundcard output set on max, and the volume on my Hafler TA1100 amp set to 3/10. I always figured this was the way, but on the Hafler manual it mentions turning up the source level to 2/3-3/4 and setting the amp levels so that the clipping LED's light occasionaly. Just curious but does this only apply when you want to crank them up to full volume (which unfortunately will never happen, living in an apt :()? Thanks :)
 
It's nice to have the soundcard level down a few notches so if you need to turn it up you have someplace to go. Otherwise you can only turn it up by adjusting the Hafler's knobs. But also be careful because sometimes other programs will reset your volume and the next thing you play could be maxed out.

If your current levels are working for you than just keep them. If it aint broke don't fix it.
