With my FD-8, if I format in "normal"mode, does sound quality suffer? It looks to me like both are 44.1k sample rates. I notice the manual says:
Quantamize - Normal- A.D.A.C.
Quantamize - Master- 16bit linear
What does that mean??
Thanks, kmar

Normal is sampled at 32kHz if memory serves me right (though I just turned 37 and my kids want to know what it feels like to be sooooo old and loosing my memory--or did they ask about losing my mind?). Sound quality of the two modes has been debated and it might be worth doing a search. I really haven't heard the two side by side. My opinion is if you have Zip disks you might want to use normal unless you are prepared to buy a ton of Zip disks (100 or 250 megs just doesn't give you much 8-track time). Considered an Orb drive yet? The cartridges run twice as expensive as a Zip 250 but give 2.2 gigs (almost 10 times more) of space!! If you have an Orb or a large hard drive then go for the master mode. Might as well get the best sound possible, right?

Peace, Jim

hi
im a little confused by the manual and something you said, you can mix down right onto the fd-8 as though it were a as you said "virtual dat, or cd burner"? if you can could you explain how? im using a zip 250 if that helps you answer my question

thanks alot

Jim,
Do you have your manual on the fd-8? In mine, it looks like normal and master are at 44.1. Which makes sense, because when I mix to DAT or CD, I use my optic cable- (i assume it would'nt work if it were 32k). Plus on the LED screen of the fd-8, it says 44.1. Again, I THINK the only reason to format in Master mode, is if you want to dump all 8 tracks separately to an ADAT. ???

I apologize folks, I forgot to mention that was the FD-4 that I use, so the normal on the FD-8 may, indeed, be 44.1kHz, but it must be compressed somehow, because you get quite a bit more time allowed in normal mode. as for virtual DAT, again, with the FD-4 you can record on the tracks 1-4 and then, in Master mode 1 you can also record on tracks L & R and exchange them with any of tracks 1-4. This means you can take all 4 tracks and mix them in stereo on tracks L & R, exchange those with any 2 of the 4 tracks and there is your stere mix to which you can now add two more tracks, mix down again, etc. Those using the FD-8 should play with this little feature.

Peace, Jim

Thanks for the clarification Jim- me thought me was loosing me mind. kmar

Yeah, Jim I think you can record to the LR "virtual" tracks in both Master 1 and Normal mode, but not Master 2. I don't know why though. As for sound quality, even in Normal, digital beats the socks off of any analog tape recorder I'ver ever heard.
