I just got a MOTU 8pre and i'm having serious trouble with it. Its taken me ages to get it running and now that i have i'm getting some serious digital distortion going on.

The Distortion is happening on everything that gets played from the speakers.

Anyone else experienced this?

I'd also like to add that the 8pre works fine on my main pc, its only on my laptop that i'm having trouble with it, which means i've narrowed it down to the firewire port.

I inititally bought a firewire 800 TI chipset expresscard but the motu didn't seem to like the 800, so i went and bought a standard firewire expresscard, its actually working now, but with INSANE amounts of digital distortion.

Sounds like it's not the interface or the card. It's something wrong with the computer itself.... Are you using the same driver version on the working and nonworking machines? Virus scans? Checked for problematic IRQ sharing by the FireWire card?

Tried all sorts mate, i'm a bit of a geek so when i post problems then something is wrong!!! lol

I've ordered one more expresscard to try, if not i'll be upgrading my laptop!!! From What i can figure out, The 8pre didn't like the FW800 expresscard, it recognised it and stuff but wasn't working properly. With the FW400 card i bought, that was just one that was in the computer shop and i STILL can't find what bloody chipset is on that so i'm assuming that its just cheap bollocks! :P

The FW400 one i've ordered, that is coming monday IS a TI chipset, so all shall be revealed to me then!

If you're running Windows XP, make sure you install the FireWire hotfix or FW800 cards get forced down to S100 speeds. That might be part of your problem. Beyond that, no idea.

I got all that and i'm running XP sp3 so its all been fixed.

GOOD NEWS EVERYONE!!! - IT FRIGGING WORKED!!!

So, a note to all you laptop users out there who are looking at firewire expresscards. The TI chip is a MUST!!! Plus, don't get cocky like i did and think that by getting firewire800 it'll be more stable!!! If the unit your using is firewire 400, then use a firewire 400 card!!!

Thanks to everyone for their help again. Can't wait to get my 2nd 8pre in a couple of weeks. 16 channels!!! WOOT!!!! Sexy Drums!

Kikkass man!

Yep, I've an 828mkII ... never any problems with TI chipset.
The express card for my lappy is just some cheap-O from Amazon "Best Connectivity" two port 1394a ... was like $35
Likewise with an older lappy that had PCMCIA ... I've a siig two port card w/TI chips. Was cheap as well.
Belkin card from Wally World in the tower has TI too. All works great.

Don't forget you can get your 16 channels on the cheap if you lightpipe an ADA8000 into the 8Pre. ;)
I picked an ADA8000 up off craigslist for $80. :D

Cheers for the hint, but i'm really liking the motu pre's. Don't want to start getting stuff cheaper because i'm working up to opening my own studio by the end of the year.

Right then.
In that case, also look at the Mackie Onyx 800r for 8 decent pres/convertors that can lightpipe (@ 96khz even).
