Is this thing any good for recording? I'm sick of the same old 57 sound. I'm in a metal band and I need full, kick ass sound in my recordings. I also heard that the beta 58 is pretty good. Help!!!

Yep, I like the E609 for distorted guitar mic'ing cabs. If you've got the channels open you can use a 57 as well and blend the two. But with one alone, I'd definitley go with the E609.

I've recorded a handful of loud distorted guitar tracks with both the 609 and 57, and have consistently preferred the sound of the 609 for in-your-face hard rock/punk sounds. It just sounds both beefier and more natural to me.

This mic is a gem for the price. It is great on guitar cabs and toms, and has amazing rejection properties. It's awesome on stage too. I have three, and they get used.

is there a difference in sound between the older e609 and the newer "e609 silver"?

how would you describe the sound on an amp, compared to an SM58? (or 57 I guess) does it prefer a certain amount of gain, or give a certain type of vibe?

have you tried it on toms?

I have not a/b'd the black to silver but I can tell you that I LOVE my blacks way too much.

I put two mics on a cab, 90% of the time it's the e609 close up and something else off axis and about 6 inches to a foot away. An SM57 sounds dumpy to me. The SM58 is marginally better than a 57. The 57 up close tends to screech while farting out the lows, the 58 doesn't screech up close so much but in comparison to the e609 the 58 is sub-par. The e609 holds up to what it should. It doesn't "get nuts" if it's being pushed. The ONLY exception I've noticed if if the guitar amp being recorded sounds like a$$ (in a BAD BAD BAD way) initially. Therefore I'll work with their tone, use one of my amps, or one of my guitars for them to use.

Nobody can convince me otherwise between the 57 or 58 over the black grill e609.... and yes, they sound great on toms.

We are talking about the e609 that is about 119.00, correct?

Also, would it be any good as a live vocal mic? They look cool.

I like their other sound reinforcement mics (E825 and E835) as much (or more) than I like my 57 and 58 for live vocals.

Yes -- fantastic mic for the price.

Works very well on guitar cabs (better than the 57 in my experience), and is great for micing toms, too.

BlackoutRick: The Beta 58 you mentioned is also great on heavy guitar, as is the AKG C414 (for a little more $$$)

The e609Silver (the front is silver, the back is black) is around $100-$120, the original e609 (all black) was around $250-$300 when it came out. I own a few e609S (silver), and I love them...

It wouldn't hurt to experiment with it, but it would not ordinarily be on my shopping list. The e609 is a mic built for one purpose. Sometimes such mics work for other purposes, but usually not best.

This is all I use for guitar cabs now. Much easier to deal with than the SM57 and without the proximity effect issues. I haven't tried using both at the same time yet, but that's probably because I haven't felt the need to.

does anybody know if the older black/blacks or the newer black/silvers sound any different? or, significantly different?

does anybody know of a clip on holder to use an e609 on toms? do these exist?
