I've used an EV 308 on my kick for years but have a 421 coming to me. Any thoughts on how they'll stack up in a head-to-head? I have a 20" non-ported kick and 22" and 24" inch ported kicks. Might one be more appropriate for some of those drums than others? They'll be used more in a live setting rather than studio.

Not a bad dilemma to have, though. EVs on snare and toms if it matters. Thanks for any ideas.

The 421 is my go to for kick but most folks seem to have it on their B list when their D12/Beta 52 isn't cutting it. The 421 just sounds more like a kick to me; you'll love it.

i've never used the 308 - but if it's one of those 'scoopy' type of kick mics ala the D112 - the 421 is a great alternative... as it's not 'scoopy.'

i find using a D112 type mic on kick and a 421 on bass (or vice versa) is a really good way to help those two instruments distinguish themselves from each other. they've got a nice yin/yang thing happening.
