Selling everything.....starting over!!

I've decided that I'm going to sell all of my ADATs and go with the 24 track digital recorder most likely from Mackie. But forget I said Mackie for a moment..... Are there other brands that you'd suggest?

I don't want to go completely digital (ie computer and software) but I want something more compact and with less moving parts. I also have a BRC for the ADATs and I 'm wondering if that can be used or would it even need to be? My board is the Mackie 32-8.
Can someone direct me in the right direction for this new endeavor?

Thanks
RF

I don't have any personal experience of these machines, but being an incurable dreamer I'm keeping track of the market. :)

You might want to check out theRadar24? I have no idea if the extra cost is worth it, but they are supposed to sound extremely good. It has a list price of $500 for than the MDR24, but there could be hidden costs either way.

Or, if you want to put out less money, Fostex has a D2424 that has a list price that is $500 less than the Mackie MDR, and then their little remote is included. :)

I've got the Fostex HD- 1624 which was replaced by the 2424 and I like it a lot. I really like mine but I'd probably like the Mackie too. Still, the Fostex is cheaper and mine has been stone cold reliable.

The RADAR looks prett sweet and is highly regarded but their cheapest package is $6000 US. It's definately at the top of my list though.

Does anybody know which units are the best for seemless transfer to a DAW? I had heard that only the Mackie HDR does this easily as opposed to their other units. I'm especially curious about the Alesis HD24 since it is only $2000.

WHAT?? You just got a new TSR-8 and an M-50 for practically dirt!

What are you talking about?

The Fostex 2424 exports to .wav files easily. And there is a package that comes with an RME Hammerfall card for even better DAW interfacing.

One more vote for the Fostex line from a satisfied D1624 owner. The D2424 is definitely the one you want: it has a newer generation of software that avoids one or two minor but annoying issues with the older units. With the Hammerfall, it is very powerful indeed- and it is *stone* reliable. I have never had any problems at all with my 2 D1624s. Your mileage may vary, but it sure works for me...

Sennheiser...... I'd never give that machine or the mixer up. I know how good they are (the 38 anyway). I'm only losin' the ADATs along with BRC. I still wanna go 24 track though. The 38 as you know only gives me 8 tracks.

Thanks for all the info about the others.... I'll look into them.

RF, here is the deal on the Radar.

Yes it is without a doubt the topdog in the recorder world. There are a couple of reasons why this is the case.

1. Sonics
iZ is almost anal about the sound of their gear and as a result have put a large part of their development into the sound of their machines. The a/d converters are considered to be some of the best on the market. The mistake most people make when comparing other hdrs to the radar is they don't realize that the converters in the radar are actually more in line with the Apogee not other hdrs.

For example the "Classic" radar converters are $2400 just by themselves. This is more than an entire SDR or Alesis so you can see why they sound so good. If you consider that the radar converters outperform outboard converters such as the apogee then the real comparison is the cost between 24 channels of apogee vs radar. In order to get the same quality as the radar you would need $19,500 worth of outboard converters.

2. Ease of use
I could fill up an entire thread on this topic alone. I was blown away by how easy the radar is to use, especially if you get the Session Controller. This is NOT a simply a remote control, the entire operation is designed around dedicated key strokes. Most every function requires one touch of a button. When it comes to editing my clients are amazed at how I can fly on this thing. :) The radar is a fast and every operation is logical and intuitive.

3. Bulletproof
I do a lot of live recording and so reliablity was a key interest of mine. I looked at every machine on the market and I heard the same thing over and over about the radar. Other than the outstanding sound everyone I spoke to bragged about how reliable their machine had been.

RF, I know this is tough decision because I have been where you are as well. So here are a few final thought that might help.

The first thing you will notice is how much better the radar sounds comparied to your adats. The radar is most often comparied to a studer 2" not other hdrs. This is definetly a pro not prosumer gear.

When using the radar for the first time it took about about an hour and all the sudden it hit me what was different about the radar comparied to my nuendo system. Radar is an audio system and it just happens to have a computer in it. I completely forgot there was even a computer in the room. There is no mouse and yes you can hook up a monitor but the monitor is not the focus of the system. I find I spend a lot more time focusing on the music and the musician and less time staring at a stupid monitor. With my nuendo system I am constantly being reminded that it is a computer that also happens to do audio.

RF, hope this helps. I could go on but didn't mean for this to turn into a book. :D

I've been doing a ton of reading on some units from the manufacturer's websites and from all of you. I'm beginning to believe that the Alesis HD24 might be the way to go for me. Is there a compelling reason why I should keep my BRC if I decided to get this machine or should I sell it to?
I checked out the RADAR and yikes.... it's a bit pricy for me right now. I checked Musicians Friend and the HD24 is at $1899.00. Any better deals that you know of?
Thanks,
RF
