seeking advice on an M-Audio interface

I have read through many M-Audio interfaces at Musicians' Friend website. I think I have my choices narrowed down to: USB2496 Audiophile Computer Interface and the AudioSport Duo. I want to record on my PC with an electric guitar and a mic. The Audiosport has a built in preamp and a PCI is not needed. I welcome any comments about this or other M-Audio products for my needs and LOW budget.
 
USB ones are quite often not as good as PCI. Go for PCI if you at all can.

Don't get a card with a pre built in, because then you can never upgrade the pre if you want better gear. There's no point going out and getting a DMP3 later if it still has to go through the crappy onboard one (believe that it's crappy, it must be for the price they've made it).

But supports only 16 bits
 
I'm going for the delta 1010 used for < 400 usd, but that may be more I/O than you need. From what I've learned it's better to have the converters in a breakout box so you don't get the extra noise from inside the pc. You may like either the delta 44 or 66.
 
I agree he should buy the best gear he can afford, but did you read this part of his post:

LOW budget.

If he can afford even an Audiophile/DMP3 combo he should by all means do it.

M-Audio does not have a reputation for making crappy gear. Perhaps this is a first.

I'm sure the preamps are at least as good as the Behringer I started with, and 16 bits is perfectly good. The AD/DA conversion quality is much more important.

that's a real good price.....but.......

I paid 450 US for mine new in the box....on sale at GC....

I would have paid more though....good gear...ya know?
