Hey Everyone! Are there any reliable programs out there (hopefully not too pricey!), that will transcribe notes that are sung into a microphone?

I am a drummer and a singer, and I compose songs....but I don't know how to raed or write music for other instruments, nor do I play other instruments (well, not well enough anyway!). What I'd like to do is sing the melodies that are intended for the other instruments, have the software notate the melody, and then take this into logic and assign a different instrument to play the notes that I had sung. Is this possible? It would open up a whole new world for me!

Looking forward to hearing the responses on this. :-D

Melodyne can do this. You can be fairly confident it will get the notes correct if you sing in tune (after all, this is what it is specialised for), but I don't know how well it can sort out timings. Assuming you record to a click / fixed tempo and it knows where the start of the first bar is, it should be able to give you at least an approximately accurate transcription.

I've owned Melodyne for a few years and was part of the beta testing for the new editor (with DNA). How will it do what the OP is asking? I must have missed something. I know that it will tell you the approximate note on the x axis, but I don't know how it transcribes them. The Y axis will just be the "blobs". Also, I don't know how you'd set it up to be a midi controller for other instruments. If what you're saying is correct, that a really cool feature that I missed. Please elaborate.

To be honest I'm not totally sure of the details. I just noticed that the version I own (think its two versions old now) shows a stave at the top of the screen that reflects what you're doing when you're editing the 'blobs', and I think you can export the notes as midi. I've barely touched most of the features though... Just drag the vocal track in, tweak it, and take it straight back into Sonar.

I might recommend checking out what Tanager AudioWorks has to offer; IMHO some of the most flexible and powerful song writing/song creation software on the market. You may or may not be able to transcribe notes from what you sing (I'm not sure), but it does, among MANY other functions, include an audio sample library of some 70 chords per key that you can drag and drop into a song "piano roll" to build your song note-by-note or chord-by-chord, and from there auto-transcribe the music, create lead sheets, or send to MIDI control for MIDI instrument programming. Also includes a large library of sample chord progressions and such.

An advantage by using their library instead of your voice, is you don't have to worry about singing on key, or getting the timing/phrasing correct, as that's all handled in the software.
