One Hit Wonder
I'm am having a problem with Cakewalk Pro 9. I can record an audio track fine (e.g., an acoustic guitar). However, when I try to record a second track (e.g., vocal), I can't hear the original guitar track while recording.

If I simply go ahead and record the vocal anyway, it records fine. Upon playback I can hear both the guitar and vocal (completely out of sync with each other of course, since it was recorded blind).

Any ideas? Is this a function of my sound card? I am using a basic Soundblaster card at present. Planning to order a Midiman Delta 1010, but right now just trying to get a feel for using the Cakewalk program.

BTW, I tried to add an audio (vocal) track to one of the demo midi tracks that came with the software, and I could hear the midi fine while recording the vocal. However, it won't do the same for two audio tracks.

First, your soundcard must be full duplex, meaning you can play/record at the same time. If it's an older cheap card, chances are it is not . . . The Delta will be. The reason you can hear Midi while recording is that it is not digital audio and uses a different part of the sound card.
Secondly, if it is full duplex, go to audio options and check the box enabling simutaneous play/record.

That's the problem with computers - there's always a logical explanation. Thanks for your help, I guessed it was related to the sound card somehow.

PA: Thanks again. I finally (after many trials) got my sound card working in full duplex. Of course that created another set of problems - i.e., Cakewalk kept freezing up on me when I tried to record a second track. This, I'm sure is due to the lack of resources on my computer system (200 mHz Pentium with 64Meg Ram). I was able to get around it by reducing the sampling rate to a lower setting. All will be fixed (hopefully) with a new computer and sound card shortly. :-)

The bottom line, however, is that I just wanted to use this as an opportunity to learn the Pro Audio 9 software. Since I'm not worried about quality at this time, it works fine for my purposes. So your help was much appreciated. You were right on with your diagnisis of the problem.

Glad you got it working !
Remember, it only begins with the new computer and soundcard. Next, you start collecting mics, compressors, mixers, processors, . . . and then comes software . . . FX plugins, soundfonts, samples . . . there's no end in sight.

you could try going to options/audio/general and selecting "mono" this might help otherwise with your machine try and get a copy of version 5 - I used to get 8 tracks playing back on a 486!! with 5.
