I posted this in the other equipment section not knowing there was a Fostex section as well.

Since I did not have any luck with the previous post I am repeating it here hoping for a better respons.

Hello,
As you can see I am newly registered and will be grateful for any help I can get on this forum. Hopefully I will be able to return some in the future as I get more experienced.

I am setting up a home recording studio with basically two principles:
- avoid a computer as long as possible, except maybe for digital recording and transfer to CD, mp3.
- any gear (effect units, mixers, reverbs/delays, etc should fit into a rack not to consume too much floorspace/desktop.

I now have this Fostex MC102multitrack mixer/cassette-recorder and have a hard time finding any information about this unit. When googling a few threads came up in this forum, where people claim to have this unit.

Questions:
Would someone please point me to a downloadable manual for the Fostex MC102?

Is it possible to record several tracks on this unit and use it as a porta (e.g 4channels?) adding one track at a time?

kindly Patrik

Suggest you try your question on the Fostex Forum
www.fostexusa.com under Support and User forum.

It is not listed on the current product documentation but there may be someone with a copy of what you want.

Hello,...

That would be me.

I'm sorry, but I have no downloadable resource on the MC102 manual.

The MC102 is a simple standard cassette deck with Dolby C, melded to a 12 channel input mixer. Thats 10 line level inputs and 2 mic inputs with preamps. There is no tracking or overdubbing on this unit, just straight taping to stereo from it's mixer section.

The quick version of what you'd do is to use the input section for up to 10 keyboard or instrument inputs, plus up to 2 mics, to setup in a stereo mix and tape to a standard stereo cassette in one take. That's as good as it gets.

If you want tracking and overdubbing capability, you'll have to seek out another unit, either a full fledged Tascam Portastudio, ( rackmount Syncaset, or actual reel/reel multitrack) or perhaps a Fostex Multitracker (Tascam Portastudio clones, all).

You could perhaps integrate the MC102's mixer with another multitrack recorder, not mentioned above.;)

Thanks!

Terfyn, thank you for posting the link to the Fostex support and user forum!

A Reel Person, nice of you to post a reply, thanks.
I acquired the MC102 for the mixer really, the cassette deck was more of a bonus I thought. I found that there was a review of this unit way back when in the SoundonSound magazine but this particular article is not posted on their website.

I guess the cassette deck is usable for live recordings or band demos or something. Anyway, I do like that the mixer is in a rack like this.

A Reel Person, what are your thoughts around this unit as a mixer. Have you used it yourself?

It's a unique product.

It was aimed at the MIDI Synth crowd, or people who would tend to have a lot of line level tone modules while performing,... virtual backing tracks as they used to known as,... while providing mic inputs and live-to-stereo recording. It think it's a very cool and unique product. It's own designation is "Keyboard Mixer" plus cassette tape recorder. It's a narrowly focused product with probably not a lot of mass appeal, but I like it.;)

Fostex MC102 Manual

Hi Patrick,

I have just joined this site specifically to let you know that I have located a PDF file of this manual. I was reading the rules and it seems unclear whether or not I can post this. email electron@cooltraxsounds.com privately and I will send you the PDF by return. Alternatively, if it is allowed, then please let me know and I will post on the site.

Best regards to everyone,

Ron Lake.
