Second hard drive install

Hello,

I'm running out of Disc space and I'm thinking about adding a second 40gig HD.

Questions: Can I install it myself? Does it matter which (brand name) HD I buy?

I can get it installed by my tech for about $120 but I found one for about $80 that I have to install myself.

yeah its a fairly easy install...make sure you read over the instructions about 10 times before you really do it....no surprises needed.....make sure you have your jumpers set and know exactly how you will set it up as far as which controller and whether you want to slave it,etc....

btw, Office Depot has a 60gb Maxtor 7200rpm drive for $79 right now ($99 - $20 rebate).....

Well guess I'll check out Office Depot.

So except for capicity, one hard drive is just about the same as another?

Also I was assuming that the second hard drive would show up in "my computer" as another drive. In my case drive D or drive G onto which I could just start downloading my music programs and whenever I wanted that drive I would just go to "my computer" and select that drive. Is there more setup than that? I mean the "slave thing"?

The slave thing is fairly easy to understand...

The harddrive you have right now with Windows on it is called your 'Master' harddrive. The other one you will setup will be the 'Slave' harddrive. Your system can't handle 2 master HD so one has to be the slave of the other. Understand? To set the new one has a slave, you simply have to put a jumper on the back of the harddrive before you install it. They will tell you in the manual which positions the jumper should be. The jumper will be placed on a thing that looks like this (at the back of your harddrive):

Hey Gidge,

I've called my closest Office Depot and they don't have the rebate special on the Maxtor. Also I went to OD's website and found the Maxtor but no mention of the rebate. If you can tell me where to get the rebate...I'll snag it!

Snagged it! I saw the link and went right down and bought one. I got home and realized they charged me $109 instead of $99 which is what the website and one of their clerks told me last night. Also the guy who checked me out printed the rebate ticket. The clerk last night didn't know of any rebate.

I think I'll try to make them honor the difference in price...that is if I don't spend more that $10 trying.

Ok so one more major question. I'm at a critical place on some mixes. I can't afford to crash and lose anything right now. Can I do this install without worrying?

Id wait until you are at a less critical place if it isnt a big hurry for the space......

youll probably get through it without any snags, but theres always the possibility the first time around.....


btw, $109 is the regular price but in addition to the mail in rebate, there was an additional $10 instant rebate, which they somehow forgot to give you...definitely demand that back (in a nice way of course).......

But you've backed it all up to CD-R anyway, so your fine, nothing to worry about. You did backup, didn't you? :)

Trust hard drives about as far as you can throw them. (far I suppose, but not what I mean). They can fail at any time, brand new or 8 years old.

Yes my system is being very onry right now I think because I'm down to less than 30% HD.

I haven't backed up yet but of course I will. Really I haven't done a backup to CD's before but I think it should be pretty straight forward. I'm only gonna save my tracks and sng. files/ personal pictures/webpage. I figure everything else is expendable. I plan on doing the 2 master's setup so that I can copy from one HD to the other.

This question is to anyone (sorry my tech knowledge is lacking).

Instructions ask me to check my system requirements to see if I need an ATA adapter card. Duh! How do I do this?

Everything else seems pretty straight forward.

I'll sit in the middle of the room and kick and squall if I have any problems.

Hey I hope some of you guys are still monitoring this thread.

I planned on installing the new hard drive as a second master which was a stated possibility in the instructions. However I've found that my SCSI "burner" is occupying the second master position so the new drive must be slaved.

My question is then....If I can't transfer files from one HD to the other then my CD burning software will have to also be installed on the new HD. Right? What about audio files that I have on my webpage? How will I get them from on HD to the other? I'm trying to isolate my music stuff on one HD without a bunch of other programs on there too.


Help!
