My microphone background is somewhat limited having had experience only with the following: AKG C3000, AKG C2000, AKG C1000, Shure SM-58, Shure SM-57, Electro-Voice 757, RODE NT1, RODE NT2, Studio Projects C3 and now the sE Electronics SE2200-A.

I have to say that these are all great microphones in their own right and have respective places and talent whether it be for live or recording use. However, I must say that this sE2200-A is now the favorite microphone of my small arsenal of mics.

Why says he? This microphone sounds so smooth and so liquid it just amazes me. There are a lot of documented reviews and commentaries as to how nice the Chinese built Studio Projects (SP) mics sound and rightly so. However, this (Shangai) Chinese built sE2200A is a much better sounding microphone in my opinion than my SP C3 and my RODE NT2. It reproduces sound in a manner and sounds like what I always thought a really good studio mic would sound like.

I did a comparative test between the C3 and SE2200-A with the Carvin 750 Cobalt acoustic guitar. I really like my C3 and it sounded nice with the enhanced top end but the SE2200-A provided more balance across the sound spectrum of the instrument and for my tastes it provided a much more acceptable sound. Good Bass, nice Midrange and a very smooth and somewhat pronounced Top End. The same result was also true when I sang a chorus or two or three into each of the mics.

This mic comes with a monstrously sized shockmount which the mic essentially screws into. The aluminum case is also quite large and comfortable as well as really heavy-duty. Electronically, it comes with a 10dB pad and a hi-pass filter.

What is also nice about this mic is that when you switch the 10dB pad in, it makes a rather distinct change in frequency response by dropping out some of the mids and adding more to the lows and highs. It’s almost like getting 2 mics for the price of one and that is a very nice thing for a budget minded home studio owner.

Interestingly enough, sE Electronics has a "try before you buy" system which you can learn more about from their retailers or by contacting them (Please note-I don’t sell them!!!).

I had the opportunity to "chat" a few month back with some of the folks at Sonic Distribution who are responsible for distribution here in the U.S. and in England. Not only were they very helpful, they were just downright nice. I highly recommend you watch this company and their products as they are making in-roads into the higher quality mic realm at lower costs. I like that lower cost piece, believe me!!!!!!!

Amazing! An e-mail from Warren Stean of Sonic Distribution!?!?!

I received a nice e-mail from Warren Stean of Sonic Distribution aka sE Electronics who read the SE2200-A commentary on my site. I blogged his e-mail so as to share his comments and info about upcoming sE stuff.
