This is a slight twist on the PC/MAC question in regard to screens (i.e. I don't care about the allegiances, just want the best experience and value for money)

I'm setting up a compact home studio from scratch and will be running Pro Tools, Sibelius and say 6 VST libaries (Trilian, OmniSphere, Synthogy, EastWest etc), so looking at the pros and cons of screen real estate setups.

Given these options (assuming both have quad core i7 with 16Gb RAM and dual hard drives) what would your recommendation be:

1 iMac with single 27 inch monitor

2 iMac with dual 21.5 inch monitors

3 PC with 23 inch Samsung PC2370 LED monitor and second 19 inch monitor

Main issue is I don't want the speakers (rokit 6) too far apart (1m to 1.2m max).

Thanks

I personally would chose option 3. I have my main 24" monitor that I put my arrange window on, then over on the side of my desk, I have my 13" imac that I put my mix window and plugin windows on. It allows for really good workflow and screen organization.

Thanks for the replies.

Jim, I plan to use the monitors side by side behind an 88 note midi controller keyboard.

Drew, you touched on one of my main dilemmas - if I have dual monitors I sense one will really become the primary screen regardless of how I spread the workflow between DAW, Sibelius and VST's. Then I thought if the screen was bigger perhaps the one screen might be better than working between two.

Cheers,

Rober

See, you could maybe do better than to place them side by each like that.
It's a "Personal Taste" thing but if you haven't looked into it yet, maybe Google "Nearfield Speaker Placement" for some suggestions.
I like mine off at 45 degrees but like I said, It's a personal taste thing.

Thanks Jim, my reply was a little simplistic - I imagined at least some angle on the screens rather than straight across. In regard to nearfield speaker placement that's why I'm trying not to get too much screen between the speakers. With the keyboard in place I imagine the speakers a metre away from me and a metre apart will be about the optimum distance.

Cheers,

Robert

I think you guys are talking about different kinds of monitors. Computer monitor screens versus audio monitors.

I used to use dual CRT monitors.

Now I just use one 23" flatscreen, and it works fine all on its lonesome
