i just recieved my VF80ex with B1, and ive been playing around with it, and i have the normal jist of it, i was just wondering, i usually sing when i play guitar, is there anyway i can sing and play at the same time without it sounding horrible when the products finished? i guess id sing quietly, and then dub it over again, suggestions would be great, thanks!

If you really need to sing and play at the same time to get the feel right, I'd suggest doing one track of singing and playing and use that as a guide track. Then overdub the guitar, and then the vocal, or vice cersa if that feels more natural. When you're happy with the overdubs, mute the guide track and mix away.

that sounds like a plan, ill go try it right now! haha it sucks when the machine is so perfect, and then you suck compared to it haha

And it's a wonderful place to be. I spent hours with my MR-8 when I first got it. The AC adaptor was so hot when I finally shut it down that I literally burned my fingers on it! Ah, that was a great day.... :D

Oh yeah, sounds just like the day I installed Vegas Pro (the very first version). At some point I looked up and it was 5 AM. I think I called in sick and just stayed up recording all the next day! :D

haha well after hours and hours, i got the basic jist of it all, except, my voice went out on me, it sucks haha, but theres always tomorrow. any tips on keeping your voice fresh?

Stay hydrated. Drink lots of room temp water. Your vocal chords need to stay moist if you don't want to have problems. If you have to stop every 10 minutes to piss, you are probably drinking enough. Avoid dairy products and anything cold, but especially citrus juices. Sport drinks are ok, but water is better.
And get plenty of rest before you start recording. If it starts to hurt, stop.

I got Vegas 5.0 and did the same damn thing! I was importing everything I had on my harddrive to play with it. I only lasted until 1AM, though. The spousal unit reined me in... :D

Hours and hours. And hours. You've only scratched the tip of the iceberg, oh_the_blood. But don't regret. None of it is time wasted.

Hell no, it's not. You learn from every mistake, and you can sit and listen to your good work and be proud. YOU created it! And each time you hit the record button, you are growing in knowledge and experience.
On caveat, however. It's addictive, and a money pit.

But it's one of the best addictions I've ever had. And I don't feel that I've wasted a dime....

thanks guys, i was playing with it a lot, but i was super tired, therefore i didnt get any good recordings down and all my songs were changing everytime i re recorded it, and tips when i get home and start recording?
it almost makes me want to return it and get like a mr8 or somethign cheaper because i spent 600 with all of it. this is the most i ever spent and im maybe discouraged by my talent haha, did you guys have any doubts?

It's a lot of machine to learn, and at first, the results might not be what you had dreamed of. Fine. Keep at it. Is it you? Then keep practicing and working till you're satisfied. That's part of what makes expertise so rewarding. It doesn't just happen. It needs to be earned.

Is it the new technology? Don't worry. Keep at it and soon you'll be an expert. It could be technique. When you get something recorded, then send me a CD. I'm no expert, but I can offer some tips.

Remember, ALL great people hit walls along the way. You could give up, or climb the wall.

Perhaps start by just laying down a simple guitar thing and then later adding a vocal. Remember that singing alone isn't the same as recording. You get tense, unnatural... Just stay with it, and don't give up. You'll get it and the purchase of the VF80 will seem more than worth it.

The recorder doesn't make the music -- you do. So stay with it till the music is what you want. Then, recording will be easy. Set high standards for yourself, but don't get discouraged too quickly if the results don't happen right away. Work at it.

thanks a lot for the advice, i realize this must have happened to probably everyone whos never really recorded before, the machines great, and im gonna keep it and work with it. if i cant record me perfectly right now, maybe i can record my friends who have experience in recording and take some pointers from them. i have a feeling this will end up being one of the best purchases ive ever made, itll just take time, i really appreciate all your advice, this place is pretty comforting haha.

Just keep at it, like Bill said. I make 10 crap recordings for every jem that I have. I have 11 finished songs that I am happy with, so do the math. You'll grow into your machine and eventually grow out of it, that's natural.
When you do get something you like, you can post it in the mp3 clinic and get some feedback on what you are doing so you know what you need to work on. Just remember when you do that you are asking for criticism, and take it for what it's worth. Not everyone will feel the same about your baby that you do. And most of them have very experienced ears, and can pick out the bad parts right away. Take the advice, make the proper changes, and you will be fine. It all adds up to valuable experience in the end, and will make you a better artist, musician and recording engineer.
