schematics for mic mods

I thought we were looking for UGLY DIY stuff. That is gorgeous! I don't care what it sounds like, I'd use that for everything (drum overhead, kick drum, guitar, vocals, harmonica, kazoo...). That is awesome! I think I'm going to take a wire brush to all my gear.

Seriously, I see why people pay for mods now. (but I still like Ken's craftsmanship). *I predict wire brushing mics will now become the hot new mod, and someone will come up with some clever reason why it sounds better..."removing a portion of the material using the wire brush increases the response in the 2243 khz region which makes all sources sound better all the time, oh and this is what Jimmy Hendrix did to all of the mics he recorded his guitar solos through, but don't forget to treat your room or else the wire brushed mic will sound like it was used to make a limp bizkit album".

* Take a look at Michael Joly's Oktavamod site he has a rat-mod that brings down the finish to an all brass housing ..... It looks cool!

Yeah I saw the rat rod and dug it. The mic actually sounds very good after the capsule replacement. I'm in to this mic for $172.50 total with the capsule swap and all so you can understand why I wasn't afraid to play with it.

I really can't wait to record with it more. Here is an excerpt from another post on it elsewhere.

---------------

An obvious reduction in sibilance issues throughout the track. I love my C1, but once a cram in through an 1176 (works well for the style of rock that we play) I quickly get uncontrollable presence and end backing off the compression to get it in check. Very quickly I realize that I have a mic that performs very well in the midrange. I can smash it and get the "in your face" feel, without having to do EQ surgery on around 7-9 k. The great thing is that it doesn't feel like I just low passed it. I get a sparkle way up there without the harshness. Proximity is good. I can be up in it's face and feel the low mids really kicking it in the ass. It's a much more open feel and I have to be careful of the room. I couldn't do a vocal track out in the middle of my room with it because it would go away quick.

Testing it this way, I would have a mid hump to it, which is good, because my eq on the original has a mid hump to it. So less eq to get my sound is awesome.

I have a new color to paint with here. Thanks so much to everyone for the input.

cool. I'm glad it came out sounding good. I think a lot of us have stuff that we don't use anymore and it might be fun to mess with and see if we can improve it or make it useable. At the very least it'll be worth a laugh and a learning experience.

I have two MK319s I might dive into soon, and a Presonus TubePre that I haven't touched in forever. That should provide hours of fun. Who knows, maybe the wire wheel will come out!

Hmm, the "ratrod" finish looks cool, but I'm still a fan of Ken's work! I love gear that outperforms it's looks.

Are you looking to get rid of those MKs?

Maybe pm me and we can talk.

Also has there been a change in the mm319 over the years? I got mine for $89 each in 2003. Now I see theyre $300+. What?

Yup. They were my and a friends first mics.

At $89. from GC you should check to make sure they aren't those Chinese knock offs that GC got in trouble for selling!
Do a quick search here for the fake Oktavas and it out lines what you should be looking for to find out for sure.

Cool. Thanks for the info.

I checked mine and I think it's russian. The logo on the front is indented, it came with the response curve/passport, capsule housing has pencil writing on it, and I couldn't see the transformers because of the wiring holding the pad and bass role switches on, but it did not say "chang" anywhere (which i guess is one of the signs of a chinese mic), and the caps were black.

So it seems to be a Russian one. I guess I probably got a deal because they were in trouble for selling the chinese ones. 2002-2003 seems to be about when they got caught and probably stopped selling chinese after that.

Oh, and I saw what everyone is talking about with the wind screen. I wonder if I could just remove the inner screen and see how it sounds?

Cool you got a real one.

Yeah if you can get that inner screen out without damage to the outer screen - do it.
