sb16 soundcard

I am a complete newbie to the world of digital recording, and am using the excellent "homerecording.com" mostly as my guide.
I have gained much from the "soundcard basics" page and have had great fun recording through the "line in"
on the soundcard onto "N-track" which I downloaded via the "digital" page. All realy exciting.
However I now wish to try a little MIDI, and here I have got stuck. On the "soundcard basics" page it says :

"a joystick port. Big deal, you say? Well, guess what, 98% of the time there's a MIDI interface hidden in this connector. You need a special $20-or-so joystick-to-MIDI conversion cable to access it, but then you can hook up keyboards and all kinds of stuff right to your sound card."

So I bought the "joystick-to-MIDI conversion cable"
and bought a secondhand Yamaha DX21 synth. but can't get it to record. I'm coming to the conclusion that my soundcard may be one of the 2% that doesn't have a MIDI interface in its joystick port (I know if I'm to take this business further I need a better soundcard anyway, but it would be great if I could dip my toe in the water with this one).

So after all that my question is: SHOULD I be able MIDI record onto n-TRACK with my synth using a SB16 mixer(220) soundcard? Does anyone know? (if the answer is yes then I might try kicking it!)

Im pretty sure that card has MIDI capabilities...I use N-track myself alot but I dont do MIDI on it....when i do do a MIDI part (rarely), i work it out in Digital Orchestrator Plus or Power Tracks Pro, then go into N-Track and import it in...But Ill give it a shot......go into preferences , midi settings, then midi devices and make sure you have selected the right midi devices you want to record....then click on Help, Contents, and go down to MIDI recording and it will take you step by step on what to do......
