SB Live, 44.100 Hz and 48.000 Hz ????

I noticed that with my SB live if I record with 44.100Hz I have a latency problem when multritracking (all tracks will not be in sync with eachother), the tracks will not record right also when combining MIDI and Audio together I get the same problem. If I set it to 48.000Hz the problem is solved, why is this?
 
I believe that the card doesn't actually sample at 44.1 but rather has to sample at 48 and downsample on the fly while the data's on its way to the hard disk. This might be why it causes extra latency.

Oh, and that's 44.100 kHz and 48.000 kHz, not Hz...
