Ok give it to me. How much does this need to be upgraded?

I'd get a separate HD for nothing but audio, as big and fast as you can afford. Keep your OS and apps on one drive and record audio tracks to the other. This is because the read/write heads on a hard drive can only do so much at once.......

SCSI would be ideal, but it's quite expensive. Right now you can get a 200MB 7200RPM IDE drive with an 8MB cache for about $100 at the local Frye's. That's a deal.

That mismatched RAM may give you problems also.

And yes, the M-Audio is probably the best bang for the buck. As the previous poster said, steer clear of any card that advertises "surround" or any kind of gaming or playback capabilities. M-Audio as well as other reputable comapnies are attempting to exapnd into the consumer market with cards like these. Get a card designed for recording if you want to record.

thanks that's quite useful info

I never knew that mismatched ram could be a source of trouble. I'll probably get two sticks of 512 once I upgrade my chip.

I'll see what I can get for HD's... (live in Canada)

Thanks!

i know everyone hates them here, but i have a behringer eurorack ub2442fxpro...the biggest of the ub series. It's great. for me at least...definitely nof for the seasoned pro, but its perfect for me. the pres are quiet with high headroom, if you don't use the built in effects (some people say that the pres are really noisy...i wonder if they ever turned down the aux2 (internal effects) return...). It's got phantom power supply and 10 preamps, so its a big buget saver...and IMHO, it doesn't sacrfice quality to an extent where i'd hafta replace it in 6 months with something better. Again, this is just me, ask anyone else, and i'd probably get flogged.

creative labs are such a bunch of liars

It says

and pure 24-bit/96kHz recording to capture subtle details in your audio creations

That's the card I have and it does only record up to 16/48. I just verified that in Cubase.

Can't believe I got ripped off like this. I'm selling it and getting the Audiophile 2496 next week for $190 CDN (about $140 US).

Not to mention I bought the Audigy for $270 ($199 US)!!!

Yay!!

well i guess i was a sucker for buying it... i didn't know what the big difference was anyways... but i was made to believe that it was a very good recording card

oh well... thanks to this site i'm a little more enlightened now :)
