Satisfied for now with my MR8

Taking the slow road
I know, I know, I'm one fickle mo-fo, but you can let that other thread die where I said I was sick of it. It was midnight, I was tired, I was reading that book with famous producers and engineers saying how they recorded all different ways and many mics and tracks and I was in that mindset I get into where I let too much in to bug me.

Ok, so I'm satisfied with it for now for a few reasons. 1. I was listening to some James Taylor and I was noticing how little is needed (in some situations) to support the vocal in a song. 2. Those engineers all seem to try to get eq on the way in and use very little in mixing. 3. I'm not expecting to do a major production here and 4. If I do capture a great performance somehow, I'll take the friggin tracks to re-mix somewhere pro. 5. It's a HOME studio. 6. more tracks or whatever? I'll try n-tracks - will do it soon anyway since I should know about that stuff by now. 7. I like the fact that there's no moving parts and 6 AA cells run it nicely. 8. a little difficulty now makes you work harder to come up with solutions now instead of putting it off for later. 9. It's small and quiet, 10. yea, if I was doing more production I'd upgrade but I'm not, 11. it's red. 12. I don't want to buy anything else for a while but maybe a mic or 2 and a pre or 2.

that's enuf for now. time for lunch.

So what you're saying is,...

the Prozac kicked in!   ;)

yup--i went to GC today and put my hands on an MR8. asked dumb questions and all. and as you say jun, ya get a good take you can take it to a bigger studio for doctoring. i couldn't do that before with my 4 trk cassette recorder.(did i say tape noise?)

but with the clean digital wavs, anythings possible. i'll need an outboard eq and reverb for my accoustic jimmy buffett-ness :D ! i already have a descent octava mk-319 mic and a beheringer MX902A mixer!

hey jun, did you say you eq'ed the vocal before you mixed it down?

Well, all I'm doing here is me. I'm just working on a decent sound of me solo and some very reserved overdubs. So the very limited amount of mixing options, if any, are ok for me, because I don't have the need to create a 'space' for many instruments and tracks.

if I was recording anyone else, I'd be in trouble because I don't have options available here.

I'm focusing on what I think I can do as simple as possible with the gear. For me that means a mic or 2 that I sound good on - and what I do is change the placement all over the place, and test every setting on the miniscule eq settings on the mic preamp. So like, what I'm saying is that if I need some eq, I'll do it on the way in. So I do a retake and another retake and then, I'll be prepared for the rare good performance I have waiting to come out. That's ok for me, becuase I'll be setting it up and pretty much keeping it there, take notes on the few setups I have for the few variations I'll be using. Talk about a personal studio, you can't get a more personal setup than I have here.

Where a pro will know how to set up the studio for many different sounds and instruments, and do it fast, I'm tuning my studio for one and taking days to get it right and it seems to be working, my sounds are sounding better.

Let's all hear it,...

for J. Unplugged & the Me-Tones!!!

[fanfare] ;)

In being around recording and live music for years now and learning all I can about recording, recording equipment, and live sound equipment by reading I've came across two quotes from the "pros" many times. One is "less is more" and the other is the "K.I.S.S. principle" (K.eep I.t S.imple S.tupid). Sure to get a pro studio recording you will probably need pro level equipment, but you can get a good solid recording with an MR8 too.

Well, yes because there's no eq in the MR8, except for some in the 3 mastering buttons that also have other unknown stuff in there lick compression that pumps. And no way to control or edit it.

Mixing down externally isn't possible either b/c the MR8 only has stereo outs. The only mixing option is to transfer all tracks to pc.

The MR8 is very stiff and is married to a specific alogorithm of use. It's in the manual and in the advertising and even at MF blub. basically, rec 1-4, internally mix it to 5&6, delete 1-4, record 1-4, mix 1-4 & 5/6 to 7/8. done. So if you have external gear, i don't know how you'd apply it to the MR8 exclusively.

external gear

its really easy, you have a pre and post fader out on a mixer, one isnt effected by the channel slider one is, all effects, compressors, delays , whatever are routed throught the mixer that way, take a post fader out to the input of channel on mr8

You're talking input to the MR8, JWG was asking me about mixing down the vocal w/ EQ from the MR8, that's output.
