What Dogman said........................great song and all the other stuff!!! :D

Wow! Thank you all for the kind words! Tim, Dog, jpw23, True, It really means a lot, especially since my soul is 100% in this song. I'll be posting a new version soon with all the adjustments I want to make.

True, I think I'd like to hear the acoustic up as well, but I want the Les Paul to stand out too so I'll probably bring one up on each side so they can still be heard.

That watery sparkly thing is an effect called "Flower" on my old Korg Pandora's Box. I thought it was kind of neat and filled in the second "hits" as a little explosion. Kind of breaking free from pain.

The flute is probably some harmonics I threw in on the Les Paul.

Thanks again everyone.

Phil

That's probably why it translates so well. It's a heartstring tugger. Nice tune! :)

It's like surfing upside down!
Careful what you ask for....sharkdive? I do believe I have an Aunt in that area of the ocean!! ;) :p

Wow, that does look like a thrilling vacation!! Are you going on the one, five or seven day adventure?

Ugh! I don't know why I'm posting this for review when I'm not happy with it, but I am still mixing and need objective viewpoints. I know I've got to redo the lead vocals and the guitarist I brought in to do the intro and main solos (I don't solo) didn't know what to write. I may can the both of them. All the other instruments and all vocals are me "by my lonesome".

Brief note: I actually wrote and recorded this song 12 years ago after the worst thing to ever happen to me suddenly walked back into my life, and it probably sounds like it's from that time period. I decided recently to re-record it "full out" and dedicate it to her!

Why, you ask? Well 'cause the bitch showed up again and got my head all confused and then all hell broke loose.

The song is called "7 Years" because of the first event. She and I broke up, she got married and divorced and after 7 years contacted me again but wasn't receptive to the relationship succeeding.

So 12 years after I wrote this - Wham! There she is again!

So the song should probably be re-written as 20 years, but I like 7 better.

Anyway, have at it! Tell me what could be better, what is off, and what I should change.

Thanks,

PhilGood

Hey PhilGood,

Very well written song, I love it!
It has all the ingredients to be radio played!
Your vocals are great, as you mentioned how deep this song goes in relation to the content and the source of the material I can hear this in your delivery of your vocals.

There is some clunking going on in the left field, that definitely has to go in my opinion, is it the original drum track used for tracking...?????

The guitar solo isn't as ill fitting as I know you think it is, just try against your better judgement in bringing the lead guitar to the forefront in volume during the solo section and have a re-listen, I don't think it is that bad. The guitars throughout the whole mix are sounding sweet. The blend is very nicely done.

Great stuff Phil!! :)

I am going for another listen!

Thanx for sharing with us!!

Gorty :)

The one day. I have about an 80% chance of seeing white sharks. I have been snorkeling in our local pool to get ready. I still have to take a scuba discovery course.

It's about a month away and I am starting to get the same apprehension I had before my first skydive. :o

Thanks Gorty!

Much appreciated. The clunking will be removed. It doesn't fit the way I thought it would.

3rd version

OK. I did a little tweaking. See what you think of this version.

80%~!!! Chances are very good!!

If you are going to 'shark dive'...why are you snorkeling? :D

You will be in a cage won't you?

Will you not use an oxygen tank?

Why am I asking all the questions?

I would be apprehensive too!! Ahhh...you will have good memories of it all though!!

I am listening to the 'revised' version of "7 Years" now.

Time will tell, if your heart is real.........such thought provoking lyrics.

The harmonies seem backed off some. They are not fighting with the lead vocal anymore.

Still listening....

With my head in my hands....I can envision all that you are singing about.

Damn! I have trouble listening for all of the recording aspects!! This song is a killer!! Love it.

The intro snare has improved muchly...and throughout the song it sounds good.

I love the acoustic guitar in this....and I love the electric too...still listening.

I'm snorkeling to learn to breathe under water without panicking. It's hard enough to do without a Great White looking at you.

We won't be using oxygen tanks. They use a "hooka" system where air is pumped down from the boat. The cage will be 20 feet under water.

After listening some more, the snare in the intro is a bit low in volume compared to the other intro instrumentation, giving it a odd fit.

The volume on the right panning of the tracks could come up a db perhaps.

I do like the way you have the outro start on the right and flow it to the left. I use the word flow, because it is a smooth transition, from one to the other. It actually sounds as if it is going through my PC monitor...like right ear through head to left ear...this effect is awesome. I hope you use it more often. It would be part your sig style. I also like how you emphasize on the right panned axe around 1:00 and again around 1:47. A db or so in volume on these would really showcase the emphasis, since they are rather low in volume. I love the use of the axe on this song. It goes well with your vox.

The interlude(break?) at around 1:45 works nicely into a difined axeplay, that makes my heart flutter and wonderful drum runs? rolls? :D around 2:05..and all of the other places you have used them...most of those are a subtle use, and I like it. You hear them as a complete piece of the song. They just fit. The drums are such a good foundation for the song. They do justice to it. Kudos.

I am just now getting around to really paying attention to the bass. There is some very good playing here. It fits well, almost too well. It blends in as a part soooo subtle at times, I had to really listen to differenciate between it and the rhythm guitar.....Talent talent talent!!

The acoustic playing is a treat to the ears!! The sound of it's strings are are like tinkerbell dust...awesome!! The more I listen, the more I appreciate this song and all the heart and soul put into into it.

I'm wondering about posting this in the mic forum. I just think it's a good example of what you can accomplish with inexpensive mics. All the mics on the drums were around $30-$40 each, (Superlux FK-2, GLS ES-57s) except for the overheads, which are MXL 603s.

The electric is done with a GLS ES-57 and a Nady RSM-1 ribbon mic.

The acoustic was done (its actually the scratch track, but I left it) with a CAD M177.

The backing vocals are with a modified Apex 460.

The lead vocals are with my home-made Ela-M 250, made from an MXL body and a SP capsule.

The preamps are either the stock pres on an old Ramsa mixer, a Symetrix SX202 or a Presonus Tube Pre.

Computer inputs are a Delta 1010lt.

They'd probably slag me a little harder than in here, eh?

Whadda ya think? Is the sound of decent quality?

Go for it!! Get slagged!! :D You wouldn't happen to be in an onery mood now would ya?!!

Brave man you are...after posting in the mic forum, the sharks should be a piece of cake for you!!!:D :D

I think the sound quality is great!!

Everything sounded good BEFORE we knew...why wouldn't it sound good AFTER?

In the end, all the expensive mics and gear will not make you sound good, if you are not. Obviously you are good and the mics did their job well too.

Spank you, True!!

...I mean...Thank you!!

I've got the chain mail on! Here we go.... :) :D

You are welkom!! A paddle a day keeps the kinky at play :D :p

What is chain mail?

What is chain mail?

They use it when diving with smaller sharks without a cage. It's like old armour made out of links or rings of steel meshed together. If the shark bites you, it doesn't break through the links.
