The hardest thing is deciding the best option...

I emailed the guy at melmusic ages ago and he told me that the MC01 was not as good quality as the C01 so that should rule it out. The C03 is just a dual diaphragm version of the C01 so I wouldn't go there either.
Get either:
A Studio Projects B3 for $329 from venuemusic.com.au If you call them they'll often lower their online prices as much as 10% and they include postage. The B1 is highly regarded here but I got the B3 because you can switch between cardioid, omni and figure 8. I love it It's a nice neutral mic but with a touch of warmth. I prefer to use this mic for rapping (unfortunatly I got it after a massive recording session )
Or:
A MXL V67g. I got mine for $215 all up from the states (eBay). Its darker than the B3 and I prefer it on my voice when I'm singing but I've found it is rubbish on female voices.

In regards to the Behringer mics I have the ecm8000s and B5 but none of their LDCs. emc8000s are noisy but I really like the B5's. I like them better on acoustic guitar than my B3 or V67g. People on this forum often tend to avoid berry gear because of bad QC but I've had no beef with any of my gear.

Basically I've been in your position and I cold go back there, I'd have gotten the B3 first because it is far more versitile than the v67. The B3 doesn't sound unreal on anything really but at the same time, it sounds very decent on everything.

I reckon it's now either:

SP B3
V67G ..or..
AT3035 (just found some good US prices (around $270AUD)

If I may add to this, the Joemeek JM-47 is another mic which is very similar to the V67.

It has very similar specs, although we are way more conservative in our spec claims. It is full frequency, so it is rated at 20Hz to 20KHz instead of 30Hz to 20KHz, and is also a solid state preamp balanced transformer output design. The difference is the JM-47 has a separate high pass filter and pad, and actually has a bit more output gain.

The JM47 is a bit more expensive, but the pad and filter are very useful. If you shop, you can find very good deals out there on the JM-47. As I am the manufacturer for this mic, I suggest you do the research for yourself, but until the Joemeek adds hit the magazines, getting the word out on a product that is available now is left to self promotion...So sorry for the plug....

sp1 mic and applies his upgrades to it. and how much his clients like it in the upgraded form.

You've really done an outstanding job of plugging SP stuff here - thanks to the attention you alone have drawn to their products, they've probably increased their profits by more than 10% over the last few years. I'd think you'd consider doing the same for Samson.

Thanks a bunch. I've had a look and the CAD I just can't find enough confidence boosting reports about it (the M9 sound like it's ok?), otherwise I'd go for it. The Rodes I've actually lost a bit of enthusiasm for mostly due to the 'shrill' nature of the NT2 I've been using. Rodes seem a bit over bright from all reports I've found, even though they are still a great mic for other reasons.

I had a lengthy talk last night with Mixmasters who are an SP agent and I'm pretty keen to go the way of the C1 or B3 now from what Mick there had to say. Today I'll see what's being used in the studio I'm going to and see how that sounds. The SP definitely appears very strong for the dollar to sound ratio... I'm kinda staggered it would be this good but there ya go.

What ever I end with, I'll be glad when the hunt is over...then it'll be a hunt for some 'other' piece of gear....

For the right voice, project, etc the C1 could be the perfect mic... same as the B3 or any other mic for that matter... then again, it could suck... that's why it's important that you audition the mics for yourself before you commit to buying a mic... or flip a coin and take your chances.

Yeah, very valid.

I tried an SP C1 tonight in the studio and I have to tell you I was pretty impressed with the damn thing. This studio takes it's mikes serious (which studio doesn't) and it was cool. Super responsive and sensitive and didn't lack much of anything while going through a good pre-amp...(a UA)

We did 3 backing vocals on one track and you could clearly pick out the detail of each voice from about 1-2m distance from the mic.

Hmmm...twas good for a first time impression. I'm confident too with the B3 after talking to the guys there. As an aside we tried two brand new TB3's out of the box and both were duds! Mr. Engineer however still vouched for the SP. This was the first serious SP episode he has had.

It's true, the SPs sound great.

Where was this studio that you tried out the SP mics at and what mics did you have to compare them to?

It was one of the Mixmasters studios. I kinda expected an SP bias of course but there was genuinely none...just a get the results type of attitude. The folk there are pretty cool.

There was no comparing mics or anything because I was purely sitting in on a session- for which I was pretty happy just to check these mics (and other mics that might get used) out a bit....and catch up with some great people.

I'm definitely not gonna say "the SP is THE mic for every vocal" or any crud like that because my exposure to it (and many other mics) is limited but I can say for a home studio like mine, I'd love to have an SP for sure. It was a good sound.

Still gotta find the best bang for buck, but I know what to expect from an SP now. Doesn't mean I won't end up with a Rode...or an MXL...or a CAD....

Haha... Wonderdog..! He is definitely one of the busiest guys I've ever met...always into something. He was pretty open about the SP... offered to loan any of 'em etc...good fella.

Mully, now that Studio Projects mics have been on the market for a while and many people upgrading from the budget mics, there are more secondhand mics available... you might want to consider buying a used mic and save yourself some money.
