i don't know if this is the right forum, but here goes...

anyone knwo where i can get samples in which people are talking? propganda maybe? any links or advice would be appreciated. thanks
 
does it matter what they're saying?
if not, hook a tape deck up to your VCR and tape some of the talking heads on CNN ... samples o'plenty! :)
 
There are lots of sites with historical speeches. They seem to all use Real Player but you can record it using "What you hear" with the windows mixer.

Just search on historical figures and sound files. You can probably find good stuff from:
Kennedy
Martin Luther King
Stalin
Hitler
Kruschev (not sure on spelling- he was kennedy's Russian nemesis) his famous "we will crush you" speech

I found some great VietNam era speaches for a project this way.
 
for the mecca of sound files interviews etc in good qualty (with a decent connection) go to WWW.NPR.ORG

All National Public radio programs are stored there and avaialbe on demand. I found a great one the other day on electroshock therapy
 
There is a sample cd called '1001 Sound Clips' -- It's worth the $40.00 -- It has crowd noise, kitchen sounds, planes, effects....its cool
 
why not redord it yourself.

I often recorded day to day noises. Portable minidisc and a microphone.. it couldn't be easier
 
if you ever need a recording of computer fans and hard disk noise, you know my email.

i don't really have any thoughts of exactly what i want. just famous or strange people talking. anyone heard and Godspeed You Black Emperor? lots of stange talking on that...

Wow! Yeah, the interspersed talky bits on Godspeed are mental! (in a good way).

"Do you think the end of the world is coming..?"

And the weird Puerto Rican guy going on about Jesus and Halleluljah.

I love that stuff: I'd love to know where those samples came from.

Mogwai had a cool sample of Iggy Pop being interviewed at the beginning of come on die young.

When I wanted a bit of random vocal stuff I recorded a radio program (off BBC Radio 4, if you're interested) about Earthquake monitoring.

But then I decided it sounded better if I reversed it and 'played' it through the mixer faders.

Sounded weird, exactly what we needed :-)

for the godspeed: i bet they went out onto the street with a tape recorder/md recorder (if they had them at the time:)) and just walke dup to random people and got a few cool ones.

i guess i will have to find some interesting people and interview them!

i got a really cool sample of my iranian friend's relative leaving a voice message. all in farsi. i copied it onto my comp and reversed it... sounded great!
 
I'd like to think that's what the Godspeeds did, but from the sound of the samples, it sounds to me like a recording from TV or film. Just my opinion.

Doesn't the bloke who does the Spiel about 'The Preacher man says it's the end of Time' sound just like Don Sutherland?

Do you do recording of post-rock stuff? Maybe we could swap tips?

PS My University opened a campus in Malaysia last year, do you know it? Just out of interest
 
yes, i record space rock. i play with and record with a band called the damn dirty apes...

swap tips... i don't think i have enough experience yet to do that... only 16 you know...

i would, however, be very grateful of any tips you could give me!

no i have no idea about a campus in malaysia... i am still in high school, and will soon be venturing off to uni... probably in sydney...

no i will not be continuing my education in malaysia. i am only here becaus emy dad works here, and we are leaving soon anyway... malaysia is a great plac ethough. cept for the drug laws.

one of our guitarists is english. we met him accidently in thailand. he is coming down in two weeks or so to continue with the band...

I should point out that the mp3s on mp3.com are not in the phys-rock vein, more general post-rock/shoegazing.

Trans Am are on Thrill Jockey records, like Tortoise, and they are most excellent, sort of analogue prog. Check it.

You can do pink floyds trick too... Just write some very strange questions on a piece of paper, give it to the people that come in your studio, or just random people whatever, have them read it in front of the mic and answer it immediately... That's what they did on dark side of the moon.

Here's the things they recorded: "In fact, there IS no dark side of the moon, due to the fact that it's all dark", "I'm not affraid of dying..."
 
yes! now i remember that! i read a pink floyd article in a magazine and they said that they did that. i need to get one of those tiny mics for my mini disc recorder! thanks guys!
