samples and whatnot

i've always just recorded music from live instruments but now i am in the need of samples of specific things...where do you guys go looking??? or do you just make all of your own??

right now im in the market for some footsteps on snow and some wolf/coyote howls...

nay idears?

Light shoes crunching over a bed of corn flakes would be my choice to make the sound of footsteps in the snow.

Of course afterward you'll have a floor full of crunched corn flakes.

FX and foley are, to a point, visually dependent and what your eyes see makes what your ears hear easier to reconcile with what's onscreen. The rules change a little if your project is audio only, but not as much as you might think.

If you do Google up a sound effects batch there's always the chance of someone --- or more than that --- spotting that as a stock effect that's EVERYONE'S choice when they need that wolf/coyote howl.

I don't have any links for you at the moment, but If you search the net you'll find some very large sound effects libraries of which you can purchase individule clips as easy as buying MP3 songs. I've found and used things as diverse as owl hoots, 16th century castle doors opening and closing, seagulls, waves, etc.

For the footsteps, you might also try a space covered with small gravel. The grit used for horse arenas comes to mind.

If you're looking for a running in snow sound, then driving a knife or stick into a sack or bin full of rice will give a fast crunchy sound.

Coyote howls-- I'd try and get the real thing, either from a sample library or a trip to the local zoo in the early evening. You could record a howling dog, but I don't think it'd be quite the same. Make sure to include a subtle slapback delay in the cue if it's a coyote on a mountain top
