Hello all,
I'm looking for some advice on purchasing equipment. I am primarily into creating experiemental/ electronic type of music. Coming from a more traditional music background ie. guitars, drums, bass, I am a bit clueless as to what type of gear I need to create the type of music I wish to. I'd like to shape existing sounds for recording. Like a voice from a movie, a dogs bark or anything for that matter. I'd like to change the pitch and speed etc. How is this done? What does this? I own a fostex Mr-8 so do I need something digital? Well, thanks in advance to all who may reply.

Welcome to the board, doc...

IMO, it will be much easier to use PC for doing such job. I mean, if you like to do tracking, editing and experiment with sound, PC offers you better way to go. I think basicaly you need PC equiped with nice soundcard, running multitrack application and audio editing program. You can expand from that point on later... Just remember, whatever you will do, it will cost more and take longer than you thought... be ready, pal :)

Or an old sampler like an Akai S2000 - currently available very cheap. You can record whatever you want on it and mess around with the sound in all sorts of ways. You can do an analog transfer to the MR8 or there is a digital output availabe, but you often have to pay extra for that. Ebay should be a good place to find an S2000 at a good price.

I don't agree for a second. Using a PC is a pain.

The best bang for the buck in second hand samplers are the Yamaha Ax000 series. A3000, A4000, A5000.

And if you are into any kind of electronic music, you need a Nord Modular.

But it has bigger monitor to watch, and shortcut to this BBS... :)

There are a lot of different samplers out there. I own a Roland Boss SP 505. Its a pretty nice piece of equipment. Do a search on Google to find out more on it. I use that and an MPC 2000xl. For me, the user curve is important. Buy pieces of gear that are a cinch to use. The MPC is a good tool for performance and for general sampling. Many artists/DJs use it in their live shows.

Both the BOSS and the MPC have 16 touch sensitive pads. Basically you assign a sound to each of the pads. Then Sequence the playback of those sounds. Some samplers have sequencers others do not. The MPC 2000xl and the BoSS do have them, and they are very helpful.

Hi, and thanks to everyone who replied. I now have a better idea on what I'm looking for. I've been looking on ebay and think I have some prospects. I do have another question though. Has anyone heard of the Boss Dr Sample series? Does this basically do the same thing. They are fairly cheap; is this a reflection of the quality? Thanks.
