I think its better, but man, its the drums. They sound like they were played in another room while the mic's stayed in the room with the guitars. Once you get the drums sorted, it should all fall together.

believe me i apretiate anyone critiquing my stuff, and all comments are more than valid. But of all the problems with the sound of that mix, that doesnt strike me as one.

Not that the drums sound great AT ALL, but distant, or live, or in another room, makes me think your hearing it under wierd circumstances.

Anyone else hear it like this???? Id think the first thing people would jump on would be the guitars!!!

But truly thanks for your comment, im not discounting it, and ill give it a listen with what you said in mind!!

thanks

Well I'm listening on the same setup I listen to everything else on. Maybe I'm just not explaining it right. The drums just seem too far back in the mix to me. Or maybe just bring the guitars down. I don't know how to explain it I guess.

Really, the guits sound like they shouldn't be hard to fit in the mix. I wouldn't bother figuring out what they need until everything else is kickin'.

Snare sounds thin... no meat or punch to it. Kick is hardly there, the floor tom is louder (and probably panned a bit too hard). Bass guitar has little definition and too low in the mix.

My approach to this mix as I said in the other thread: start with snare and kick, get them sounding as good as you can. Get the rest of the drums to sit with with the kick and snare. Then get bass, then vocs. When all that is sitting nicely, the guits should be able to be mixed-in easily from the sound of it.

This is better, drums are improved but still need more energy for the song.

I recently found out for myself that I have some far more superior results when I don't use the amount of treble and treble recording (pointing at the center cone) on the guitar cab.

The snare has a bit too much snare and not enough stick.
I would use some compression with a fairly slow attack 15-20 and a fast release 20-90 with around 7dB gain reduction.
Maybe double the track , add a gate to it . Use a gigantic attack and then blend it with the original ; just an idea.

The toms sound great, nice job on the automatisation or gating.
The floor tom has a too sharp/short attack I think, something is bothering me there.

I personally like to add samples on the drums and then blending those with the original sound , really makes everything cut trough.

Now on my personal pc the drums sound fine. The guitars need to be a little louder. But hey, speakers are all different. And it depends how you have your eq set on your player also. I can set my eq different in itunes (my default player) and bring the guitars where I like them. I use Klipsch speakers on my pc, so they reproduce music very well. (And Loud). Now on my studio pc it sounds totally different (vocals are low). Now on my vintage (30 years old) Sansui 9090db and Polk Monitor 10's it sounds great when I tweak the mid on the reciever. I try to find a happy mix that sounds descent when played on anything. But thats impossible and the eq always needs tweaked on one of the players. Or maybe my ears are just whacked !!! :) Everyones hears things a little different.

any additional details on the mix? Gear? types of instruments?

I think i layed all this out in another post about the same song, but ill give it a quick breakdown

*logic seven express
*two presonus firepods daisy chained
*Glyph external hard drive
*audix pre pack drum mic kit (7 mics) and one sm57 on the top of the snare
*sm57 on the guitar cabs
*bass direct with no modeler, just comp and eq
*left guitar is a les paul through a marshall jcm 900 and a 1960 lead 4x12 cab
*right guitar is a telecaster through a twin reverb with a fulltone distortion pedal
*drums are a very high end DW rock kit, 2 rack toms, floor, kick hat,2 crash and a ride.
*vocals were done through a mxl 9000 tube powered condensor ($200 special)

Firstly the playing and singing is very tight. Makes this easy to critique for mixing, because you can really get to the fine points without being distracted by the performance. I found the overall mix started to sound fine around 3/4 of the way through - like it had settled in nicely. My reaction in the earlier parts was that the snare was bit thin and the vocals a tad low. But as I said it started to gel towards the latter part - natural reaction to a fairly good mix...

:) :D :) :D
