I'm going to try and score a "SoundBlaster Live 24 bit" or "Soundblaster Live 5.1" on the weekend. they don't cost too much, but should do the trick, eh?
A new post by Richard Monroe (10 Questions for the Ages") has a reply in it by Tim OBrian that sort of tells me I should too.
I'll try that next anyway and let you know.

Well, I installed a "SoundBlaster Live 24 bit" soundcard and it solved the problem.
Now I'm rapidly getting all my old analog studio recordings on my hard drive and life is good.
